by John Rittenoure - TULSA, Okla. (December 11, 2021) - AmeriFlex / OCRS IMCA Sprint Car competitors were honored Saturday night at the annual awards banquet held at the Osage Casino in Tulsa.
Top 10 drivers and series sponsors were recognized with hardware and point fund checks. Joe Bob Lee of Cache, Okla. picked up top honors as the 2021 champion.
Lee has faithfully been chasing the points title for four years and has logged the most miles of every competitor driving from southwestern Oklahoma to attend every race no matter where the show was booked. Lee never missed a show during his four years.
“This is our fourth full year of chasing the points and chasing up and down the road,” recalled Lee. “It feels good to see the teamwork start paying off.”
After picking up his first career victory on opening weekend at Red Dirt Raceway Lee knew this year might be a good one.
“We started off the season here at Meeker in the B feature,” Lee said. “We did not make the show. We won the second night. That was a highlight followed by a second victory at Nevada.
“After the first three or four nights we had two bad nights and did not qualify. We kind of knocked ourselves out of the points. We started racing to win verses racing for points and had eleven finishes on the podium in a row. That turned our season around.”
On the podium Lee thanked a long list of sponsors and family for making his championship run possible.
Lee also won the IMCA Oklahoma State Racesaver 305 Championship as the highest finishing IMCA licensed driver in state competition that included racing with OCRS and at Lawton Speedway.
It was also announced by series co-owners Kerry Gorby and Terry Mattox that sprint car racer Michael Tyre will be the Competition Director for the 2022 season. Tyre will take over for Mattox who leaves to become Competition Director for the ASCS National tour which he purchased recently.
