Inside Line Promotions – SAPULPA, Okla. (Nov. 16, 2021) – Frank Flud swept the Winged ‘A’ Class portion of the Lucas Oil National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division doubleheader at Creek County Speedway last weekend.
The two triumphs pushed Flud’s season win total to 35 triumphs, including 10 with the NOW600 Series – the most of any driver this year.
“We’re still trying new things on the new cars and we’re learning more week by week so it was a good run to finish out the season, getting podiums every time we hit the track and sweeping Winged ‘A’ Class,” he said.
Flud charged from sixth to win a Winged ‘A’ Class heat race prior to the feature victory from the pole on Friday.
“The car was really good right out of the box,” he said. “We ran second most of the race. On a late-race restart I was able to get around the outside of the leader and get the lead with about five laps to go.”
He duplicated that performance on Saturday, winning a heat race from third and the feature from the pole position.
“I took off on the start and tried to never look back,” he said. “It’s definitely cool to be able to go out on top, especially with the new chassis. We’ll try to build on that throughout the offseason.”
Flud was also effective during the Stock Non-Wing competition, running from third to win a heat race and from fifth to third in the feature on Friday.
“We’re really trying stuff in wingless and are learning,” he said. “The car is really good. We just need to get it a little bit better. We got to third pretty quickly and fell in line with the leaders. There wasn’t an opportunity for the three of us to race in traffic to see if we could get the win. I wasn’t stoked about running third, but I was okay with it.”
Saturday also featured a heat race win before a runner-up result in the A Main.
“I ran third for a long time and finally got cleared into second,” he said. “I was slowly tracking Johnny (Boland) down, but there was no way I’d have caught him unless we had a late-race yellow. It didn’t play out in our favor so we settled for second.”
