Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2021) – Dominic Scelzi achieved a dream on Saturday evening when he was crowned the champion of the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series.
Scelzi all but had the title wrapped up a month ago. However, it became official when he hit the track during the season finale on Saturday when the Stockton Dirt Track hosted the 38th annual Tribute to Gary Patterson.
“I’m just so thankful,” he said. “It’s been something I’ve wanted to accomplish for a long time. To do it in the family car is very special. Now that we’ve gotten here and know what it takes I hope we can continue to grow our program, chase the championship next year and hopefully repeat.”
Scelzi kicked off the weekend on Friday by competing in an unsanctioned 360ci winged sprint car show at the track. He qualified sixth quickest and placed second in a heat race to set himself up for a successful feature. Scelzi made the most of the opportunity, scoring his 22nd victory of the season.
“We were really good,” he said. “We timed in decent. For when we went out and how my laps went I felt sixth was pretty good. Then we went third to second in the heat race. In the main event we went one lap and the second-place car flipped. When we went to the double-file restart the leader went to the outside. We got a really good restart and slid him into turn one. We ran the bottom of turns three and four and the middle to bottom of turns one and two for most of the race. The track was a bit treacherous so it was great to get out of there with a win.”
The event concluded on Saturday when Scelzi competed in both the 410 and 360 divisions. He nearly duplicated his success in the 360 ranks, setting quick time before advancing from fourth to second place in a heat race, from fifth to third in the dash and from third to second in the A Main.
“We took the lead pretty early and felt we had a pretty good pace,” he said. “I got caught behind a lapped car and wasn’t able to get clear so we got passed. I felt like the top three were pretty equal. We ran the leader back down and then stayed even with him. Lapped traffic didn’t lose us the race, but it cost us the lead and that’s all it took.”
Scelzi was also a contender during the KWS-NARC portion of the program. He qualified sixth quickest, ended second in a heat race and placed third in the dash to line up on the inside of the second row in the main event.
“We were closing in on Shane (Golobic) and I felt like our car was getting extremely strong,” he said. “I think it was only about 10 laps in when a circumstance took us out of it. It’s unfortunate because the way the race played out I think we had a really good shot at contending for the win, but you can’t win all of them.”
Scelzi was unable to finish the race and he was credited with an 18th-place result before he celebrated his first championship.
This weekend features races on Friday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., and Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif.
