Inside Line Promotions – ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa (Sept. 21, 2021) – Kaleb Johnson wrapped up his racing season with a runner-up result with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series Saturday night at Rapid Speedway.
“We had a pretty good night,” he said. “Maybe one of these days I’ll win a race. I think we finished second four or five times this year.”
Johnson began the Rapid Speedway Nationals slotted third in a solid heat race lineup.
“I think we were in the toughest heat of the night and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” he said. “I got a decent start and ran third most of the race before I was able to get by Jody Rosenboom with a lap or two left. That put us in the feature redraw.”
Johnson pulled the No. 3 for his feature starting position.
“I knew it was going to be tough with Terry McCarl starting alongside,” he said. “You know he’s going to get a good start no matter what.
“We were able to get to second right away. Terry had a decent lead, but we were able to catch him in lapped traffic. The rubber came in around Lap 5 or Lap 6. I was able to get close to him a couple of times, but it would’ve been tough to pass him. He has the experience and he would’ve known what to do to prevent me from passing him, especially in the rubber.”
Johnson’s second-place showing was his eighth top five of the season.
He was also able to post a top-10 finish with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour a week ago Tuesday at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, where a poor draw got his night off to a challenging start.
“We drew the highest number so we had to start at the back of our heat race,” he said. “We were able pass a couple of cars and that had us starting 11th in the feature.
“I got together with another car at the beginning of the race and it bent our frame. It was just a racing deal where both of us had nowhere to go. I didn’t stop so I kept my spot on the restart. Once the race got going, we got kind of spaced out and it was tough to pass. Most of the cars were on the bottom of the track. I was able to pass one car before we had a caution for a green-white-checkered restart. I was able to get by Ryan Bickett for ninth after the restart, but I lost that on the last lap and finished 10th.”
