YORK HAVEN, PA - Frankie Herr has a dual focus heading into the last few weeks of the Super Sportsman season at BAPS Motor Speedway.
First and foremost, Herr is worried about winning races. Now that the season is winding down and Herr is in a point chase, he would like to get his car owner, Bill Devine, his first championship in over 30 years of racing.
Herr took a step in the right direction last Saturday night. The Carlisle, Pa., driver surged to the front in a hurry and drove away to an easy victory in the 25-Lap BAPS Super Sportsman main event on Brooks Graphix/Herr’s Chip Night at the speedway.
It was Herr’s third victory of the season. More important, he took a 55-point lead over Scott Dellinger in the 2021 standings with two races to go.
“We’re there to win races,” Herr said. “For [Bill’s] sake, I would like to win him a championship. But like I said, we are there to win races and let the points fall where they fall.
“Bill is in the same boat. He’s an awesome car owner, and there is no pressure, but I would like to win him a championship. We’ve got to get consistent the last two weeks and run the best we can.”
Herr wasted little time getting to the front. By the time the first lap was scored, he charged from 10th to fifth. A caution on Lap 2 bunched up the field and made the march to the front a little easier.
One lap after the restart, Herr blasted by Nate Young for second. Five laps later, he drove around early-leader Dave Hollar and took the lead.
“We were pretty fortunate the whole evening,” Herr said. “We hit the marks early in the night and got in position to move up there quick. I guess we had that restart with only two down and restarted third when it went single file.
“We were good. I could see the leader wasn’t driving really straight through the corners and was able to get by him pretty easy. I just had to be patient and watch some of the lapped cars, because they can get you.”
The rest of the event belonged to Herr. There were no more cautions, and he cruised to an easy 3.727-second victory over Kenny Edkin, who started ninth on the grid.
Hollar settled for a respectable third-place finish. Devin Beidel and Sportsman 100 winner Russ Mitten completed the top five. Mike Enders earned Mac Tools Hard Charger Honors by advancing from 22nd to 10th.
In the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main, Matt Murphy started on the pole and wired the field in the 20-Lap affair.
Murphy got the jump on Ben Whitaker and never looked back. Chase Billet started third and took second on Lap 4.
There were four cautions over the race distance. Murphy was in charge the entire way and took the win by 1.750 over Billet, Randy Zechman, Whitaker, and Travis Mease.
Sam Rial won a fierce battle with Patrick McClane to take top honors in the 20-Lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock main event.
Donnie Broderick led the first five circuits before McClane wrestled the lead away on Lap 6. Rial, who started seventh, made his way to the front and took the lead on Lap 19. He won by a mere .282 seconds at the finish.
McClane settled for second, with Doug Hoffman, Michael Goodwin, and Dustin Hogue completing the top five.
The 15-Lap Limited Stock feature was won by Adam Campbell, who passed Matt Worley for the win on Lap 10. In the Street Stock main event, Brian Walls led the last 24 laps of the 25-lap race and earned the victory.
