Inside Line Promotions – DONNELLSON, Iowa (Sept. 14, 2021) – Gunner Ramey joined the Sprint Invaders last Saturday night at Lee County Speedway, where he made his first career start.
Ramey entered the race riding a streak of four consecutive top 10s. The Terry Doogs Racing driver finished where he started – second – in a heat race, which narrowly missed the dash by one position.
Ramey lined up ninth of the 20 drivers to make the feature and he spent much of the race mired in the middle of the field. Ramey, along with most of the other competitors, ran the top line next to the guardrail and a razor-thin cushion with little opportunity to make passes.
“The track was super slick all night,” he said. “We had to rip the top and bounce the car off the guardrail in turns one and two.”
Ramey wound up 11th during a performance he said should have been better.
“I definitely need to drive the car harder and find the limit without crashing and tearing up our equipment,” he said. “I wasn’t racing the track how I needed to be as a driver.”
The night also emphasized how key starting position is, particularly on tricky tracks.
“If I had gotten one more position in the heat race that would’ve put us in the dash and from there within the first few rows to start the feature,” he said. “It’s really hard to win races outside the first few rows and starting mid-pack just makes it even tougher.”
Ramey will have a short turnaround and an opportunity to put the knowledge to the test again this week at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., as he is slated to run the 11th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this Thursday through Saturday with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour and ASCS Warrior Region.
It will mark the third time Ramey has competed in the Hockett/McMillin Memorial and the second behind the wheel of the No. 21 winged sprint car. His first start came in a non-winged sprint car.
“I’m really hoping the third time’s the charm,” he said. “This track has haunted me a little bit in the past. We’ve always had some sort of bad luck to where we don’t get to show what we have. I’ve known the Hockett’s all my life and grew up going to this race as a spectator every year. To do it now as a driver is really special and I hope we can put on a good show for all the friends and family that are going to be there.”
The event also marks an important weekend for points. Ramey trails Austin O’Neal by one point in the ASCS Warrior Region championship standings with just four races remaining.
