Inside Line Promotions – NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (Sept 13, 2021) – A third-place finish at the 21st annual Jerry Richert Memorial last Saturday continued a string of top runs at Cedar Lake Speedway for Kaleb Johnson.
“We had a pretty good night,” he said. “For whatever reason, we’ve always done well at Cedar Lake. This was our fourth time there with our own car and it was our worst finish. We finished second the other three times. I really enjoy racing there.”
Advancing from his fourth starting position in his heat race was key to Johnson’s eventual podium finish in the main event.
“We were able to move up to second in our heat race, which gave us enough passing points to qualify for the feature redraw and one of my crew guys drew the No. 2,” he said.
Johnson started on the front row alongside Chris Graf while veteran Brooke Tatnell lined up third.
“I spun my tires really bad on the start and I dropped to third behind Chris and Brooke going into the first turn,” he said. “I eventually had a pretty good race with Brooke for a while before we let Justin Henderson sneak by us.
“I got by Chris later for third and stayed behind Brooke by about half a straightaway for the last part of the race. It was a pretty good race for us, but I made a couple of mistakes that I wish I could have back.”
Johnson raced approximately six-and-a-half hours away at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., the previous night during the Bobby Parker Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“The surface at I-80 was kind of weird,” he said. “It never really slicked off for some reason. It was mainly hammer-down around the top for most of the night. The format had us running two heat races. We went from sixth to third in the first one, but dropped a spot from fourth to fifth in the second. They used combined passing points for those two races to line up the feature and we started 13th.
“We got up to ninth after passing Carson McCarl on the bottom with about five or six laps to go, but I stayed down there too long and Carson got back by me along with another car. We finished 11th, which wasn’t great, but it was better than our other two times there this year when we didn’t finish.”
Johnson will race with the ASCS National Tour again on Tuesday at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa – a track where he had success in his 305ci sprint car – before moving on to the Rapid Nationals at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, this Saturday.
“We’ve raced in Spencer a few times before – once in a 360 and the other times in a 305,” he said. “We’ve always done all right there. Spencer is where I won my last race in a 305 three years ago.
“We’ve raced twice at Rocky this year and finished second and third. We’re hoping to improve on that a bit.”
