Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (Sept. 7, 2021) – David Gravel scored four top-five finishes during four straight nights of racing in Washington throughout Labor Day Weekend.
The solid weekend keeps the Big Game Motorsports driver ranked second in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series championship standings with only 15 races remaining this season.
“It was a solid weekend,” Gravel said. “If you take away a couple of things it could have been an awesome weekend. I felt like we qualified good all weekend except for one night and that took us out of the running for the $25,000 to win. Overall, we had two solid nights and the other two we finished third and fifth so when you can get top fives on nights that aren’t your best that’s a positive.”
Gravel kicked off a trio of nights at Skagit Speedway in Alger last Friday when he qualified second quickest. He won a heat race, placed fourth in the dash and gained a spot in the feature to finish third.
He nearly duplicated his success the ensuing night, timing in third quickest before winning a heat race and the dash. Gravel led the first 21 laps of the 30-lap feature before traffic cost him a pair of positions.
The Sage Fruit Skagit Nationals wrapped up on Sunday with Gravel qualifying 11th quickest. He picked up a position to place third in a heat race before advancing from eighth to fifth place in the A Main.
The action shifted to Grays Harbor Raceway on Monday. Gravel set a new track record during qualifying before he won a heat race. A rally from sixth to third place in the dash started him on the inside of the second row for the A Main.
“Last night we got it too tight,” he said. “We were really good in the dash. It doesn’t take much to throw your car balance off a little bit.
“It’s hard to win races. There are seven or eight guys who are really, really good. On these short tracks with tight corners, when you start in the mix it’s hard to move forward. You have to be really good to be able to move forward. Last night we didn’t have that. The other nights we kind of maintained. When we went eighth to fifth that was our best car of the weekend. The track was really fast that night and it went green to checkered.”
Next up is the Gold Cup Race of Champions this Friday and Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif.
“Gold Cup is a cool race,” Gravel said. “Chico is a tough race track. It’s always a challenge racing there. We have to try to qualify good to put ourselves in a good position because if you start in the back anything can happen.”
