Inside Line Promotions – Mt. POCONO, Pa. (Aug. 18, 2021) – Joey Amantea is set to compete in a pair of Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars events this weekend.
Amantea plans to visit Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa., on Friday and Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., on Saturday. Wednesday’s race at Bridgeport Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J., rained out.
“We feel like we have a pretty good program and I’m excited to get behind the wheel a couple of times this week,” he said. “The opportunity to get some more laps and to continue to learn is always appreciated and these are tracks we can definitely learn from.”
Amantea last competed with the series two weeks ago when he picked up a pair of top-15 finishes. He enters this week eighth in the series standings and only trails fifth place by 53 points.
“We really are not looking at the points deal anymore as it seems to kind of take away from the focus of driving the car and learning,” he said. “We’d love to get a top five in the points, but at the end of the day it’s about hitting the track each week fast and growing. If we can do that the points deal will take care of itself.”
In an attempt to further his learning curve during his rookie season with the series, Amantea planned to roll out a second car for the Bridgeport Speedway event on Wednesday. Veteran driver Tim Buckwalter was going to pilot the red car while Amantea handled the driving duties of the team’s black car.
There is a chance Buckwalter will continue to drive the second car in various events for the remainder of the season. Amantea believes that it will benefit him to be able to learn from a seasoned veteran and he is looking forward to the opportunity to pick his brain.
“My family has been very good friends with Timmy for a long time and he knows that I want to do this full time and be great,” he said. “Having him run the car will allow us to figure out what is going on with the red car in terms of whether it’s the car or the driver. He can also help me learn a lot and I trust any feedback Timmy can give me. Hopefully we can do this a few more times this year and kind of speed up our process of learning about these cars. It’ll be nice to be able to tell him what I’m feeling or seeing out there.”
