Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 10, 2021) – Early misfortune on his preliminary night caused Elliot Amdahl to focus on gaining more racing experience and knowledge at Knoxville Raceway last weekend during the 31st annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank.

“Our weekend didn’t go as well as we hoped,” he said. “We got stuck behind the eight ball early on our qualifying night when a brake caliper bolt broke just as we were pushing off for our heat race. Not starting our heat put us way behind in points.

“But I was satisfied with how we raced after that, especially since we only race at Knoxville once a year. After our feature on Saturday I felt like I was a much better driver there then when we arrived.”

The mechanical failure mired Amdahl deep in the B Main starting grid on Thursday. He rolled off 18th before finishing 17th.

“I felt good at the start of the B Main and passed four or five cars early,” he said. “I made a few mistakes in the middle part of the race and lost some spots, but then felt really comfortable toward the end. While I got lapped in the final laps I was able to run with the leaders once they got by me so that made me feel good about our speed.”

With Saturday night’s features lined up by points earned on a driver’s qualifying night, Amdahl started 13th in the D Main.

“I knew we had little chance of advancing out of the D Main since we were starting so far back and it’s a relatively short race,” he said. “Because of that I made a mental goal of just running the bottom of the track and trying to get as many laps down there as I could. I think the hardest thing to do at Knoxville is to be really smooth on the bottom – being able to accurately enter and exit it consistently.

“It seemed like it paid off. I got to where I felt really good on the bottom by the end of the race. I had dropped back to 16th, but was able to move back up a bit and finish 13th.”

Amdahl will be idle from racing this weekend before returning to competition on Aug. 21 at Off Road Speedway in Norfolk, Neb., with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series.
