Inside Line Promotions – WINCHESTER, Va. (Aug. 3, 2021) – Joey Amantea competed in both 600cc wingless micro sprint and 360ci sprint car competition last weekend during two nights of racing, finishing fourth on Friday at Spirit Auto Center Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J., and 10th on Saturday at Winchester Speedway during a Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars show.
“It was a fun weekend and we had some decent results,” he said. “We’ve just got to go out there and have fun and the results will come to us more often.”
Friday night marked a return to the wingless micro sprint action after engine woes plagued the team last week. Amantea finished third in a heat race, which garnered the 10th starting position in the A Main. He fell back to 19th as a result of a car stalling in front of him, but battled back to finish fourth for his sixth top-five outing of the season.
“We were pretty good in the heat, but I didn’t redraw too great and that started us 10th,” he said. “We ended up going to the rear for something out of our control, but if not for that I think we had the car to beat. I’m just glad to have a running motor and be competitive again.”
Amantea shifted gears toward his rookie campaign with the USAC East Coast Sprint Cars as he headed to Winchester Speedway on Saturday. He began the night by finishing sixth in a heat race, which started him 12th in the feature. In only his second career visit to the facility, Amantea gained two positions to finish 10th for his seventh top 10 of the season with the series.
The result also moved him up one position to sixth in the championship standings. Amantea only trails fifth place by 10 points.
“We had a tough start in the heat race and it really cost us and we just didn’t have the car tight enough,” he said. “We got as high as eighth in the feature and lost a few spots there at the end, but overall it was not a bad night.”
Next up for Amantea will be a wingless micro sprint start at Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa., on Wednesday followed by a pair of USAC East Coast Sprint Cars starts at Bloomsburg Fair Raceway in Bloomsburg, Pa., on Friday and at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa. on Sunday.
“I’m really looking forward to this weekend and hopefully we can come home with three solid runs,” he said. “We’ve been trying to get a race in at Bloomsburg for what seems like forever, so I’m looking forward to that visit and we just run really well at Selinsgrove.”
