Inside Line Promotions – MARION, Ill. (Aug. 3, 2021) – Frank Flud overcame misfortune to finish fourth out of more than 100 entrants last weekend during the Terry Sprague Memorial at Southern Illinois Raceway.
Flud captured the outlaw non-wing micro sprint event in 2018 and 2019, and his focus was on returning to Victory Lane last weekend. However, fortune wasn’t on his side after a strong start to the event.
Flud advanced from sixth to second place in a heat race and he won a B Main on Friday to line up on the outside of the front row for the main event.
“They had just done track prep so the bottom was super hooked up and I got hung out to dry on the start of the race,” he said. “I fell back to sixth I think. We just rode around and I wasn’t pushing the issue too much. We were trying to cruise because they locked the top six into Saturday. We got up to third when someone in front of us broke and we got collected into it. We had to go to the back with like five laps to go and we weren’t able to get back to sixth.”
Flud rebounded from the late crash to finish 12th.
He returned to the oval on Saturday and once again faced unfortunate circumstances in the heat race.
“Guys were trying to win it by the flag stand and I got ran over from behind,” he said. “It knocked the left rear down so we weren’t able to finish the heat race.”
Flud was buried at that point, but he began to dig out of the hole with a run from 14th to fourth in a B Main. He then rallied from eighth to second in the Last Chance Qualifier to earn a spot into the A Main. Flud capped the event with a charge from 20th to fourth.
“They only had one caution,” he said. “It’s hard to run those guys down and pass them. It’s one thing to run them down. It’s another to pass them. At the end of the day it was a great run for the team. It’s not the result we want, but it’s nothing to hang our heads about.”
Flud will return to action this Saturday at Port City Raceway in Tulsa, Okla.
