YORK HAVEN, PA - Matt Ondek had every reason to fold in the closing stages of the Super Sportsman main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.
It’s not just Ondek feeling the pressure of getting his first win at the York Haven facility. He also had to deal with heavy hitters like Tony Jackson and Frankie Herr to do it.
None of that mattered. Ondek was masterful over the second half of the 25-Lap affair, holding off both Jackson and Herr to claim his first career Super Sportsman victory at BAPS Motor Speedway.
“This is unbelievable,” Ondek said. “We finally did it. We’ve been getting closer and closer. Danny’s been tuning on this car. I have to give him a ton of credit for getting me to this point.
“I have to thank Dan Miller Racing Engines and Carburetors for just putting us in Victory Lane, finally, and giving us one hell of a car tonight. I can’t believe I’m standing here.”
While Ondek celebrated his first win, Troy Miller bagged a sizable $1,500 payday for capturing the Viper Risk Management Smokey Frye Classic. He passed his son Shaun Miller to take the lead and the win.
“The kid, he’s been running good,” Troy Miller said. “He just overruns the corner sometimes, and this thing just sticks to the bottom. I had no reason to move. I didn’t see anybody, and I’m not moving.”
Luke Deatrick started on the pole for the Super Sportsman A-Main and led the first three circuits before Steve Fannasy took over the top spot on the fourth circuit.
Ondek, who started sixth on the grid, made his way into the top five on Lap 5 and surged into fourth one lap later. When the caution came out on Lap 9 for Craig Morrow and Ryan Rutz, Ondek was in the third position.
The restart wasn’t kind to Fannasy. Jackson, who started ninth, charged into the lead on Lap 10. Ondek followed and took over the runner-up spot.
It didn’t take long for Ondek to make his move. He reeled in Jackson blasted into the lead on the 13th circuit.
“I got back there at the beginning of the race, and I just kept holding on,” Ondek said. “The car kept getting faster and faster.
“I looked up at the board, and I saw Frankie there, and I was like, ‘Oh, crap, we’re in trouble now.’ I don’t know where he ended up, but I was just keeping it straight and ran the crap out of it the best I could.”
It was enough.
Jackson remained in second, with Herr holding down third throughout the second half of the race. They made one last charge, but Ondek was up to task, clearing the lapped car of Tom Wyckoff in the last couple of laps to secure the win.
“It was very important [to get by Wyckoff],” Ondek said. “I could hear [Jackson] up there, and I was trying to go. The car was handling good, and I tried looking at the screen, which is kind of hard to do.
“I got a quick look over there with two to go just to see who was over there, but I just tried to keep my concentration and go. Man, it’s about damn time. We did it, and I was pretty sure we had it at that point in time.”
Jackson settled for second, with Herr coming home third. Russ Mitten and Kenny Edkin completed the top five.
The Limited Late Models took the track, with Shaun Miller grabbing the early lead. He held it for six laps, before Troy Miller, who started third, took over.
Once out front, the elder Miller wasn’t challenged. He opened up a six-second lead before a late caution closed up the field, but that didn’t stop him from pulling away to the 1.025-second victory.
Randy Stout got by Miller for second. Miller settled for third and was followed by Chase Billet and Jed Latshaw.
“I didn’t know how far I was ahead, but it really didn’t matter,” Miller said. “My car was really good. I knew it was going to take a really good racecar to beat me, because I was really good on the bottom.”
In Extreme Stock action, Patrick McClane won an early battle with Donnie Broderick and went on to score the victory in the 20-Lap feature.
Travis Horan led the first lap before Broderick took over. McClane, who started sixth, stalked the leaders before taking his place at the front of the field on Lap 3.
McClane led the rest of the way and took the win over Broderick, Sam Rial, Horan, and Hunter Fulton.
