CG Motorsports. (July 21st, 2021) Matt Covington and team closed out the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Northwest swing with a win and trip to Victory Lane abord his Shark racing/Loose Change mount at U.S. 36 Raceway this past weekend.
Covington started the night off with a 3rd place in the heat, after starting from the sixth position. The result would net a re-draw that gave Matt the pole position for the feature.
With the drop of the green, Matt would follow in second as Garet Williamson paced the field. Approaching lap traffic on lap 8, Matt would hustle his way passed to take the lead. Working through traffic the race would get interesting among the top-5 with the laps winding down as Covington, Williamson, Hickel, and Hahn all diced back and forth through the lappers. A late restart with Matt pacing the field, would restack the top-5 nose to tail for a dash to the finish with a handful of laps to go. When the checkers flew the A-Rock Materials/Triple X chassis would cross first and claim his second national tour victory of the season.
"We drew the pole for the feature, but the top was the preferred line”, stated Matt. “I was able to get the jump into one, but he had the speed off the top lane to get the run down the backstretch and pace the field the first handful of laps till we hit traffic. It got pretty hairy in traffic. Having to be very aggressive at times because nobody was going to give an inch, so I felt like I had to earn everything once I got the lead. A few times, Garet could have easily forced me off the top of the backstretch, but he left me room, and I appreciate that. A few guys wouldn’t do that, but that’s what a clean racer does. He did me right and raced me. Luckily, we were able to hold off the charges and stay out front to the checkers. I was glad to get another win and keep improving upon the season we have going so far. We got a busy stretch of racing coming up and like to use this momentum to make the most of Sprint Week to keep battling for the championship. Again, I need to say thank you to Matt Howard for his work and dedication this season, he has done an amazing job. Also need to give a shout out to Mike, aka Big Scoop. He has been doing a lot back at the shop week to week and also been a big asset this week in preparation for Sprint Week.”
Next up for Matt and the team will be the start of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Sprint Week presented by Smiliey’s.
