Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 20, 2021) – The highlight of a hectic week in Ohio was a 13th-place result in a Kings Royal for Jason Sides.
It marked his 10th career Kings Royal A Main appearance and his best outing during the crown jewel event since 2014.
“It was a step forward,” he said. “We had gotten up to ninth before a caution came out. I felt our car was better before the caution. It was almost like we were too good too early. On the restart a couple got by us and we struggled to get going again. We spun our tires and didn’t get going as well. There was a gaggle of cars around us. I had been hoping for a caution to gather us up, but after that I wished we hadn’t had a caution.”
Sides opened the busy World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series week by almost overcoming a slow qualifying lap last Tuesday during the Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park in Attica. He charged from 12th to seventh in a heat race and from eighth to fifth place in the Last Chance Showdown, which was only one position out of transferring into the main event.
“We were late in qualifying and the top got so far around,” he said. “I thought we’d try something and run the bottom and across the track. There wasn’t much at all there. I slid and really it put ourselves in a position where we were starting in the back. To get back going and make the progress was good, but to be one spot out of making the feature, you hate that.”
Sides parked his car early during the opening night at Eldora Speedway on Wednesday followed by two rainy nights, which sidelined Sides until Saturday when the half-mile track featured a pair of $175,000-to-win Kings Royal races.
Sides transferred from the C Main and advanced from 22nd to 16th in the B Main during the afternoon show before a charge from sixth to third place in a heat race locked him into the evening’s Kings Royal A Main. He maneuvered from 18th into the top 10 before settling for a 13th-place result.
“The track had some moisture in it and the top and the bottom were kind of equal,” he said. “You could run in really hard on the bottom and it’d stick you coming off. We made some wholesale type changes on the car and it seemed to work. That caution probably cost us a top 10, but we were glad to make the show and move forward.”
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday, but a lack of grip on the tricky track ended with Sides finishing 10th in the Last Chance Showdown.
Next up is a trip to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., on Tuesday for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup followed by a visit to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals on Friday and Saturday.
