CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (July 15th, 2021) Matt Covington ended last weekend’s Grizzly Nationals with 5th and 4th place finishes aboard his Triple X/Shark Racing Engines mount with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at Gallatin Speedway.
Matt began Friday night with a 4th place effort in the heat after starting 6th. These results sat Matt in the 10th starting position for the feature. Covington broke into the top 5 within the first few laps. He was able to battle into 3rd at one point, but was shuffled back to 5th again by the race’s end.
“We would have liked to had the podium, but we made the most of the night after starting 10th,” Matt commented. “I don’t think we had anything for the leaders, but I made a small mistake there that cost me 3rd to Westbrook. Once the track got abrasive, I didn’t have many opportunities to get it back.”
Saturday night had the A-Rock Materials/Loose Change machine starting from the pole in the heat race. Using it to his advantage, Matt jumped out front early and grabbed the win. This effort granted Covington the 6th starting position in the feature. During the A, Matt moved around the top 5, but ultimately crossed the finish line in 4th.
“Saturday, we were fast in the heat race, just didn’t get any passing points from the pole,” said Matt. “We were decent in the feature. But again, just a bit off speed wise to contend for the win and found myself battling with Hickel most of the race for 3rd. Unfortunately, he got back by me and we were stuck in 4th when the rubber arrived. But we’ve got good consistency, we just need to find that extra speed to get the wins.”
Next up for Matt and the team will be US 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour this coming weekend.
