Inside Line Promotions – NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (July 6, 2021) – David Gravel posted his 20th top-five finish of the season during World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series competition last Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway to cap the Independence Day Spectacular.

The Big Game Motorsports driver rebounded from a late flat tire to score a 12th-place result on Friday during a frustrating finish to an otherwise stout night.

Gravel set quick time during qualifying and won a heat race before a third-place finish in the dash lined him up on the inside of the second row for the A Main. He battled for a top five throughout the race before the late-race flat tire.

“We were going to have a solid night for sure, but it just got ripped away from us,” he said. “It was an odd deal to get a flat tire. We had plenty of tire tread left. That’s two in the last couple of weeks that’s out of our control, but that’s part of racing.

“All things considered to finish 12th and make something good out of the bad, it could have been a lot worse.”

The team changed the tire and Gravel returned to the track as the last driver on the lead lap. He gained a handful of positions in the final two laps to finish 12th.

Saturday was a work in progress for Gravel, who qualified 13th quickest. A rally from fifth to third place in a heat race placed him seventh on the starting grid for the main event.

“We went out later in qualifying and we lacked a little bit of speed,” he said. “It doesn’t take much to be out of the ball game in qualifying. We put our heads down in the heat race. We passed a car and had a little bit of luck with someone falling out so that put us starting further up in the feature.”

Gravel battled for a top five throughout most the race before ending fifth.

“We were struggling on our balance and didn’t feel good for the first 10 or 15 laps,” he said. “There was a restart and we were eighth. We got a good jump to get by a couple of guys. We got into some clean air and when the fuel burned off we felt better. I was up to fourth and lost a spot on the last lap when I missed the bottom.”

Gravel returns to action this Saturday at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wis., for the Badger 40. He is the winningest driver in World of Outlaws history at the track, capturing four triumphs during eight career series races at the oval.

“Wilmot has been a great place for me,” he said. “I’ve been able to win there in three different race cars. Hopefully we will continue that trend.”
