Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 29, 2021) – Alex Hill set a pair of personal-best results while enjoying a successful weekend of racing at the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup hosted by Skagit Speedway.
Hill’s sixth-place run in Thursday night’s A Main was her career-best feature finish with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour while a 12th-place performance on Saturday marked the Hill’s Racing Team driver’s best-ever Dirt Cup finish.
“We had a really good weekend,” she said. “Things worked out better for us this time. It was much different than the way things have been going lately.”
On Thursday a stout field of 46 drivers invaded the track for the opening round. Hill finished fifth in her heat race before winning a qualifier after starting on the pole.
“I got a good start and was able to lead the entire race,” she said. “That gave us a decent starting spot (11th) for the feature.
“In the feature, I didn’t really move forward much until after about 10 laps. Most of the cars were running the top of the track and I was one of the few on the bottom. My car was really good there and I was able to make some passes, especially on restarts. I think I was actually up to fourth at one point, but the bottom went away right at the end and I finished sixth.”
Friday wasn’t as kind to Hill, beginning with a poor pill draw that put her in a deep hole that was difficult to climb from.
“I started last in a heat race that had a lot of great cars,” she said. “It’s tough to do anything when you start behind cars that are as good – or even better – than you on a track where it’s difficult to pass and I wasn’t able to improve my position.”
Hill was able to move forward in both her qualifier (10th to seventh) and a B Main (ninth to fifth), but it wasn’t quite enough to get her into the A Main.
“It was disappointing to miss the A Main by two positions, but at least passing those cars moved us up to a better starting position for Saturday night,” she said. “For our third Dirt Cup in a row we started on the pole in our B Main.”
Similar to her qualifier on Thursday, Hill took advantage of her pole starting position in Saturday night’s B Main by leading every lap and advancing into Dirt Cup’s main event.
“I was able to get the lead at the start,” she said. “Our car was really working well on the bottom and that was the place to be. I don’t think I was challenged by anyone.”
The win placed Hill in the 18th starting spot for the weekend’s biggest race.
“I didn’t get the best start and I had contact with another car and lost a couple of spots,” she said. “But we had a pretty good car and we were able to move up some. We got to 12th at the finish and I was pretty happy with that.”
Hill and the rest of the ASCS National Tour competitors will have this weekend off before competing at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont., July 9-10.
