Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 21, 2021) – Tyler Thompson captured his first career podium finish with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour on Sunday evening during his fifth career start with the series.

Thompson entered the Fred Brownfield Classic at Grays Harbor Raceway with only a half-dozen starts with Cook Motorsports, but the team quickly clicked.

A fourth-place finish in a heat race on Saturday was followed by a runner-up result in a B Main to advance into the main event. Thompson maneuvered from 20th to 14th during the A Main.

“It was a different track for us,” he said. “We ran some small tracks and when we went to a bigger track like Elma we struggled to start. In the B Main we were able to dial in what we were missing. I felt like we had a good car going into the A Main. It was a really good run for us. The top might have been the preferred line, but we really worked on the bottom. I think that helped us on Sunday in the heat race.”

Thompson continued to march forward on Sunday. He hustled from the fifth starting position to win a heat race, which made him the high-points driver and earned a spot into the feature redraw. Thompson pulled the No. 1 to line up on the pole for the main event during only his fifth career ASCS National Tour race.

Thompson led the first five laps before dropping to second. He fell to third on the final restart. The third-place outing tied his career-best run with Cook Motorsports and marked his best performance with the series.

“That’s one of the biggest races I’ve ran,” he said. “It’s our biggest run on our biggest stage. I felt like we made steady improvement throughout the weekend. We got the car better and I started driving better.

“With being new with Blake and figuring things out we go into each weekend thinking we can win, but our goal is to get into the main and see what we can do. We just focus on what we can control and go from there.”

Thompson and Cook Motorsports plan to join the ASCS National Tour this Thursday through Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., for the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.

“We’re confident and we know we can keep pace with the national drivers, but Skagit is a whole different place,” he said. “Hopefully we can be close to the front again come Saturday night.”
