Inside Line Promotions – LOGANSPORT, Ind. (June 15, 2021) – Frank Flud defended his Big Dance title in style last weekend at U.S. 24 Speedway, which showcased more than 60 drivers vying for the $10,000 top prize during the outlaw non-wing micro sprint event.
Flud was stout throughout the three-day event, which began on Thursday. He advanced from eighth to third place in a heat race before winning a qualifier from the second starting position. That gave him the pole for the main event.
“We were sitting in a pretty good spot and had some mechanical issues,” he said. “We’re not sure what it was. I felt it losing power so I pulled off before anything super bad happened. I think I only made eight or nine laps. Everybody said I was almost a straightaway ahead. It didn’t pull down the straightaway like I thought it should. I dropped to the bottom in turns one and two. When I came out of the corner it didn’t want to pull at all so I pulled in.”
Flud gave up his shot at the win and locking directly into Saturday’s dash to preserve the engine. He was credited with an 18th-place result.
“We put our other motor in and restarted on Friday,” he said. “We had a good heat race and put ourselves in a good position all night long. I was fortunate to put myself on the front row to win the prelim night.”
Flud maneuvered from fifth to third place in a heat race and from fifth to win a qualifier, which gave him the pole position for the second straight night.
“In the heat race we were all right and at the start of the qualifier I fell back quite a ways,” he said. “I was way too tight. Thankfully it was a 20-lap qualifier. The car really came to me. I crossed the stripe in second and the leader didn’t go to the scales so that put me first. It was the first qualifier so that gave me the pole for the feature.
“They did track prep before the feature. I ran the first five or six laps on the bottom. We had a caution and I moved up. I kept my distance the rest of the way. It was pretty uneventful.”
Flud’s victory was his 13th of the season and locked him into the second starting position for the dash on Saturday. A runner-up result in the dash lined him up on the outside of the front row for the $10,000-to-win main event.
“I was kind of nervous about it because they had done some track prep,” he said. “Starting outside I had to sail it off into turn one and hope the top held me. Everything worked out. Alex (Bright) stayed within a few car lengths of me the whole race. A couple of cautions saved my butt. I was a little better on the shorter runs, which is not common. Toward the end we caught some traffic again that held me up. He got right on me and pulled a slide job on me in turns three and four. He knew he wasn’t going to clear me so he backed out of it. We both jumped the cushion and drag raced to the checkered flag.”
Flud won the battle to claim the prestigious event for the second straight year.
Up next is another marquee event with the Engler Machine & Tool, Inc. Highbanks Hustle this Friday and Saturday at Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion, Ill. Flud won the outlaw winged micro sprint event in 2016 and last year.
“I’m super pumped to get some wings back on the car,” he said. “I love winged racing. It’s been almost a month since I’ve had wings on the car. I always look forward to going back to SIR, too.”
