Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (June 9, 2021) – Justin Henderson produced a fifth-place finish behind the wheel of the Mike Sandvig Racing No. 7 at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday.
The top-five outing followed up a 14th-place result at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday.
“It was one of those weekends where we would have liked to have had better results, but it really wasn’t that bad either,” Henderson said. “Sometimes you can be your own worst enemy in this sport and I think we just overcomplicated things for ourselves this weekend and the results showed.”
Henderson kicked off the action at Knoxville Raceway by qualifying 15th quickest out of 29 drivers with a lap of 16.410 seconds. He then finished where he started – second – in a heat race to earn the 11th starting spot for the feature event.
Henderson struggled on the initial start and dropped back a few positions as he found himself in 14th early in the race. With the feature event going caution-free and the field getting stretched out, Henderson wasn’t able to mount a comeback and he settled for the 14th-place finish. He remains second in the track’s championship standings.
“We brought the car back that we crashed at Huset’s last week and it took us all night to try and find the base we needed to be at,” he said. “We made a bunch of changes and it seems like we just never quite got it dialed in. We fell backwards and honestly we just were not very good all night.”
The following night the team headed to Huset’s Speedway for I-29 RV SuperCenter Night. Henderson qualified eighth quickest out of 19 drivers with a lap of 11.126 seconds. He then finished third in a heat race to garner the 10th starting spot for the feature.
Henderson was on the move early and steadily made his way into the top five. His drive forward stalled there as he suffered a broken right rear shock and nursed the car home for a fifth-place result at the completion of the 25 laps. The top-five finish allowed him to gain points in the championship standings. Henderson currently sits third and now trails first by a mere nine markers.
“We were really quick early in hot laps and we made a few gear changes and I think we just went a little too far with the gear in time trials,” he said. “We were really good in the feature. We were just kind of picking our way to the front and then the car just kind of seemed to lose handling. It turns out that we had a broken right rear shock most of the night and we just never could really tell. When the shock was cold and in the pits, the problem wouldn’t show itself. However, when we got going on the track and it heated up is when it would really be an issue. I’m just glad we found it now and that way we’re not beating our heads later trying to figure it out.”
Henderson and Sandvig will race three times this weekend. They’ll join the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series on Friday and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway for the Brownells Big Guns Bash before competing in a Buffalo Wild Wings Northern Outlaw Sprint Association event at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday.
“We know what we are up against with the Outlaws coming into town and the goal is to just try to put together a couple of mistake-free nights and leave with a few good finishes,” Henderson said. “We know we have equipment capable of contending and it’s up to us to not screw it up. I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
