Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (June 2, 2021) – Jack Dover highlighted a three-race weekend with a charge from 17th to third last Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.
It was his career-best 410ci winged sprint car finish at the dirt oval and his best result in 410 competition since a second-place showing in August 2014.
“There were a lot of good drivers there,” Dover said. “I don’t do the 410 deal a lot so to go from 17th to third with that caliber of competition was a great deal.”
Dover, who was driving for Rick and Chris Bowers, qualified ninth quickest to open the Buffalo Wild Wings Northern Outlaw Sprint Association event on Sunday. A fifth-place finish locked him into the 17th starting spot in the A Main.
“Patience was key,” he said. “We had a good setup. I ran the bottom the whole race. On the last restart we got around Carson McCarl for second on the bottom. He had the momentum on the top and got back around us. Once he did that we moved up and my car was actually better. The bottom was pretty good, but it started to go away there at the end. Once we moved up the last three or four laps our car was pretty good. Even if we had to be up there the whole race we could have made some moves.”
Dover’s third-place result was his fifth podium of the season and earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
He opened the weekend in his own car the previous night at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, where Dover qualified 14th quickest. He won a heat race with a last-lap pass to secure the ninth starting spot in the main event.
“We found some old notes from last year at Knoxville from a night that was really good,” he said. “We put those on the setup and the car felt really good. There’s a couple of little things we’ll change next time. The car got better later in the feature. I think a lot of it was fuel load. That’s something we’ve discussed, to be better at the beginning of the race and still have something at the end.”
Dover maneuvered to a sixth-place result, which was his best outing of the season at the track.
Following Sunday’s stout performance, Dover wrapped up Memorial Day Weekend on Monday at Huset’s Speedway. He qualified a season-best third and finished fourth in a heat race. Dover closed the night with a 12th-place result in the A Main, which was his first time of finishing outside of the top 10 in five races at Huset’s Speedway this year.
“We struggled all night,” he said. “We qualified well finally and tried some things. They went out and reworked the track before the heat race and there wasn’t a lot of passing. Come feature-time we didn’t have the stagger we needed. We winged it and hoped for the best. I couldn’t get the car to rotate the corner like I needed to.”
Dover plans to race this Friday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.; Saturday at Off Road Speedway in Norfolk, Neb., with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series; and Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.
