Inside Line Promotions – SELINSGROVE, Pa. (May 25, 2021) – Joey Amantea competed in a pair of 360ci sprint car events last weekend, earning a 15th-place finish in winged competition on Friday and a 13th-place result in non-wing action on Saturday.
“Overall, it wasn’t a horrible week, but I know we are definitely better than the results show,” he said, “We’re gaining on things slowly, but I’m also learning how much I truly don’t know about these cars quite yet.”
After engines troubles in hot laps halted plans of competing in a wingless micro sprint on Wednesday at Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa., Amantea kicked off the weekend on Friday with the United Racing Club by finishing sixth in a heat race at Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa. He then started 18th in the A Main and powered forward three positions to earn his ninth top-15 finish of the season.
“I still don’t have a ton of experience in the winged car so I was pretty happy just to come out with a top-15 finish,” he said. “Every time we get in the winged car it’s a learning experience and I learned so much about the cars that I didn’t know.”
Saturday marked a first-ever visit to Selinsgrove Speedway for Amantea and he took a liking to the track instantly by being fastest in Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars hot laps. He was challenging for a heat race win from the fourth starting position before hitting a rut and falling back to finish fifth. He then ended where he started – 13th – in the feature to garner his second top-15 outing in as many days.
“We were really fast right out of the gate and I knew we had a car capable of contending,” he said. “I almost flipped it in the heat race and managed to save it to get in the show, but it really killed our night and put us behind the eight ball the rest of the night.”
Next up for Amantea will be a pair of wingless micro sprint starts at Action Track USA on Wednesday and at Greenwood Valley Action Track in Orangeville, Pa., on Saturday. In between he’ll make a stop at Big Diamond Speedway on Friday to compete with the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars.
He enters the weekend currently 10th in the championship standings and only trails fifth place by 31 markers.
“The points deal is really close across the board so it seems like we can make up some ground with a few good runs,” he said. “If we can get a little luck on our side, I don't see any reason we can’t come home with a top 10 and move up a few spots.”
