Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 12, 2011) – With Oklahoma City’s Joe Wood, Jr., closing in on a second series title, the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region fires back into action this Saturday night at South Coffeyville’s Mid-America Speedway.
Saturday’s card at Mid-America marks the first stop of the season at South Coffeyville for Oklahoma’s premier touring Sprint Car series after a rainout earlier in the year.
After capturing his first ASCS Sooner Region crown in 2009, Wood, Jr., enters Saturday’s action with a 96-point edge over 2011 ASCS Lone Star Region champion Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK. Only two nights of competition remain after Saturday’s card including an October 1 stop at Creek County Speedway and then the season finale on October 8 at Thunderbird Speedway.
While Wood, Jr., holds a healthy advantage over Covington, Guthrie’s Michelle Decker is just 19 points behind Covington in third. Andy Shouse and Rick Wright, Jr., round out the current top five in Sooner points, with the rest of the top ten including Claud Estes, Cameron Hagin, Lee Little, Koby Barksdale and Danny Wood.
Two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion Sean McClelland topped last year’s series event at Mid-America Speedway.
