Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (May 19, 2021) – Jack Dover’s weekend consisted of a pair of podiums and a charge from 23rd to fourth.
“I’m extremely pleased, especially with Sunday night,” he said. “Whenever you flip and can make something good out of it it’s a good way to end the weekend. All three nights the tracks were pretty heavy and locked down so to get the results we did was great.”
The weekend began on Friday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., where Dover drove his sprint car from seventh to third place in a heat race. That garnered the outside of the front row for the start of the A Main.
“We were good in the heat race,” he said. “The track was heavy and locked down so we were lucky enough to pass some cars. Then in the feature it was the same thing where it was slick in the middle. At the bottom it was really heavy so that’s where the whole race was run. We didn’t free the car up enough and we were way too tight. We ran second early and then I got tight one time and pushed up the track. Someone snuck under me so we finished third.”
Dover then headed to South Dakota for a pair of Northern Outlaw Sprint Association races in the Rick and Chris Bowers No. 81 sprint car. It started on Saturday at I-90 Speedway in Hartford, where Dover qualified third quickest in his group and placed third in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the seventh row for the main event.
“We get around there pretty good in my 360 car so I knew going into the night we had a shot at doing well,” he said. “Come feature-time we started 14th and picked them off one by one. I was going above the cushion in turns one and two and diamonding off the corner. I carried a lot of speed when I did that and that’s where I got a lot of guys.”
Dover hustled from 14th to second and his dozen positions gained were tied for the second most.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway, where Dover timed in 10th quickest in his group.
“We didn’t qualify very well, which was my fault,” he said. “I got over the cushion too much in turn three both laps. Then in the heat race we got up to fourth and had a shot at getting another guy. He got over the cushion and the car got upset. It turned down the track and I had nowhere to go. We collided and both of us flipped.”
The team hustled to repair Dover’s car prior to the B Main, in which he advanced from sixth to fourth place to earn a transfer into the back of the main event.
“We came in from the B Main and made some changes,” he said. “I knew if we were patient and stayed out of trouble we’d move up. We were able to rotate the bottom really well and that’s where we got a bunch of guys.”
Dover maneuvered from 23rd to fourth, which earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars. He ranks fourth in the track’s championship standings – only 24 points out of the lead.
“This winter and coming into the race season we were going to be happy with top 10s and finishing races,” he said. “We ran sixth in the opener and now just got a top five after starting at the back. We’re meeting our expectations plus more. If we can qualify better and do well in the heat race to give ourselves a good starting position I think we have a shot at winning one of these races.”
Dover plans on racing his sprint car this Friday at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, before he returns to the Bowers’ No. 81 on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.
