Inside Line Promotions – BECHTELSVILLE, Pa. (May 19, 2021) – Joey Amantea continued his bid to earn Rookie of the Year honors with the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars series with two solid outings last weekend.
He garnered a 10th-place finish at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa., on Friday and a 12th-place result at Grandview Speedway on Saturday. Amantea ranks eighth in the championship standings – only 10 points behind fifth place.
“With weather and such we hadn’t really been able to run the 360 too much, so it was nice to get back in the car and make laps,” he said. “I know we have the equipment to compete and now it’s about time for the driver to figure it out so the results can show how good we are.”
Amantea kicked off the weekend on Friday by finishing fifth in a heat race at Bedford Speedway. He then started 15th in the A Main and gained five positions to earn his sixth top-10 finish of the season.
“Bedford was a really cool track and I was in a good position in the heat race to start higher in the feature and I made a mistake,” he said. “Come feature-time the track was really slick and we just kind of did the best we could and got ourselves a top 10.”
The series headed to Grandview Speedway on Saturday to conclude the weekend doubleheader. Amantea finished sixth in both a heat race and the B Main. He accepted a provisional for the feature and lined up 21st on the grid. Amantea kept his nose clean throughout the 25-lap A Main and moved forward nine positions to finish 12th.
“It looked like the bottom was the place to be in the heat race, but the top came in and I just chose wrong,” he said. “We took a provisional to earn points and we ended up moving forward, but overall it was a disappointing night and we’ll learn from it.”
Next up for Amantea will be a trip to Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa., on Wednesday to compete in wingless micro sprint competition followed by a stop at Big Diamond Speedway in Pottsville, Pa., on Friday for a United Racing Club 360 winged sprint cars show. He’ll visit Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa., on Saturday with the USAC East Coast Sprint Cars before closing the weekend on Sunday at Spirit Auto Center Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J., for the second Poker Series event for the wingless micro sprints.
“We’ve got a lot of racing ahead this week and any time we can race is a learning experience for me,” he said. “Selinsgrove will be a fun night as it’s a new track for me, but we’re hoping to maybe get ourselves a top five or two and get things back on track.”
