Sheffield Reaches New Heights After Earning Micro Sprint Victory, Paving the Way for Medical Cannabis

Inside Line Promotions – JONESTOWN, Pa. (May 18, 2021) – Friday night featured a special moment for Connor Sheffield, who captured his first micro sprint feature victory of the season at Linda’s Speedway.

Sheffield swept the night by winning both his heat race and the main event during his second start of the year at the dirt oval, where he competed in the 600cc wingless micro sprint division.

“We struggled with adversity throughout the night with almost losing the motor chain to losing power steering during the heat race,” he said. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to make it through the feature without power steering due to exhaustion, but somehow we did.”

Sheffield took advantage of a good draw that placed him on the outside of the front row of his heat race. He picked up the victory – his first of the season – to make the feature redraw. Fortune was on his side as Sheffield garnered the No. 1 to score the pole position for the main event.

Sheffield made the most of the opportunity as he held off teammate and veteran racer Pat Bealer for the victory in a thrilling race that went down to the wire.

“We want to use this win as a platform to raise awareness about Gastrointestinal Dysmotility Pseudo-obstruction, which is something I’ve faced throughout my life,” he said. “It is a rare condition that resulted in an ileostomy. Medical cannabis truly changed my life and opened opportunities for me. I am not cured and my disease is progressive, but medical cannabis is the only medicine we have found to bring relief, helping me to be able to eat and keep weight on.”

Sheffield is believed to be the first medical cannabis pediatric patient to reach Victory Lane in the sport.

“Our goal is to prove that medical cannabis can not only save lives, but it can improve it,” he said. “Additionally, we battled it out with two other drivers the entire race under a blanket without touching wheels. Medical cannabis use does not make someone a danger to others. When used properly medical cannabis is a medicine just like any other medicine.”

The 16-year-old has his sights set on stepping up the racing ladder and ultimately landing in the NASCAR Truck Series.

“Currently NASCAR’s drug testing policy would prevent me from competing,” he said. “We know it’s controversial, but people like Olympian Michael Phelps, retired NFL running back Ricky Williams, NBA player Kenyon Martin and MMA champions Connor McGregor and Nick Diaz have proven that using medical cannabis as a medicine in non-intoxicating doses does not effect your performance.

“We look forward to continuing to advocate for medical cannabis and bringing awareness to gastrointestinal diseases.”

Sheffield plans on returning to action this Friday at Linda’s Speedway.
