Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (May 4, 2021) – Marshall Skinner charged forward to score a pair of top-five results in recent races at Riverside International Speedway and Jackson Motor Speedway.
Skinner dropped to eighth then rebounded to second before settling for a third-place finish Saturday night at Riverside International Speedway.
“I started sixth, but hit a rut and bicycled early in the race and fell back to eighth,” he said. “I made it up to second, but then I missed the bottom going into turn one on a restart. That opened the door for (Tim) Crawley to get by me. It was still pretty cool that Derek (Hagar), Tim and I finished one-two-three since we’re all good friends.”
Skinner and Hagar had a spirited race for the lead in a heat race that entertained the fans.
“We started on the front row and raced side by side for over half the race,” he said. “You can race two inches off his right rear and trust him. It’s a lot of fun racing someone like that.”
Skinner’s attempt at double-duty racing for the evening ended early when the engine let go in the McCord Farms 305 sprint car as Skinner was running second in his heat race after starting fifth.
Two Saturdays prior, Skinner advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race and from ninth to fourth in the main event at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., during an ASCS Mid-South Region tilt.
“The track at Jackson was really rough from all the rain,” he said. “It had a lot of character. There wasn’t much they could do about it. Normally it’s pretty slick and smooth.
“You had to race the track more than the other cars. It was a track where the more experienced drivers did better. You couldn’t hit the ruts sideways or you’d get in the air. You had to go up to the wall and then drive down across them.”
Next up for Skinner is the Living Legends event at Riverside International Speedway this Saturday. Skinner will race his uncle’s 305 sprint car as well as his own 360 machine.
“For the first time in my career I get to drive a sprint car owned by my uncle, Ray Bugg,” he said. “Ray raced for about 60 years and is the reason I got into racing. My dad helped him when I was a little boy and I just grew up around it because of him. I’m truly honored to drive his car.”
