YORK HAVEN, Pa.: It doesn’t seem to matter what the conditions are or the format, Kenny Edkin can get it done in Super Sportsman competition at BAPS Motor Speedway.
Edkin has won plenty of regular events at the York Haven, Pa., facility, and now, he can add one as a cheater to his growing resumé.
On Saturday night, Edkin made a couple of strategic tweaks to his car. That led to the Marysville, Pa., driver topping the field in the 25-Lap Midway Sealcoating Cheater’s Day main event for the BAPS Super Sportsman division.
“I’m the best damn cheater,” Edkin yelled in Victory Lane. “We were down here Wednesday night testing and getting used to this, and to be honest with you, the only thing we changed tonight were these Sprint Car wings. Wow, that was exciting.”
With Edkin starting on the pole, some fans probably thought another victory march was a foregone conclusion. Rich Eichelberger had other ideas, charging from his eighth-place starting spot to second by the halfway point.
Eichelberger got a crack at the leader when Chris Meleason stopped on the frontstretch on Lap 18. On the restart, Eichelberger hounded Edkin before wrestling the top spot away on the 19th circuit.
But Edkin, who had to fight off a fast-closing Chase Gutshal, wasn’t done. He stayed close and was able to slip by Eichelberger to retake the lead coming to the one-to-go sign.
“It was pretty tight between Rich and Chase that we were all using three different lanes in every corner,” Edkin said. “So, I kind of felt like Rich jumped the start there, and they didn’t call it, but we drove him back down and passed him.”
Edkin had just enough over the final circuit to hold on and take the win. Eichelberger settled for second, with Gutshall nailing down third. Scott Dellinger came from 10th to fourth, with Frankie Herr passing seven cars to advance from 12th to fifth and earn Hard Charger honors.
“I got to thank all of my guys,” Edkin said. “Doug, for sure. This is two weeks in a row as a winning crew chief. Doug, Adam, Paul, my Dad, George, John, Larry, Danny Miller ... he builds a hell of a powerplant.
“It’s just exciting. I don’t think I’ve ever gone around this track so fast on the curb. That was pretty wild. It almost felt like we were out here racing Sprint Cars just being able to beat down the curb.”
Said Eichelberger, “We were pretty good tonight. It’s just a shame I had to give it up there at the end. We got a little loose, and I went to the bottom to protect, but I probably should’ve stayed up high. This is the best run we’ve had for a while, so it’s good.”
In the Wingless Super Sportsman main, Tony Jackson took the wing off and outran Bill Brian Jr. and Steve Wilbur to earn the victory in the 20-Lap race.
Jackson led the opening three circuits from his pole-starting spot. Fourth-place starting Matt Ondek cruised to the front of the field and wrestled the lead away on Lap 4.
Brian, who started sixth, won a fierce battle at the front and disposed of Ondek on Lap 7. He led through the 11th circuit, before Jackson fought off Ondek, Wilbur, and Brian to grab the lead for the final time.
Wilbur slipped past Brian to take second. Bob Gushall and Kevin Gutshall followed the top three to the stripe. Steve Whary, Bob Gutshall, and Kevin Gutshall were heat winners for the 26-car field. Eric Rutz was the Hard Charger, advancing from 24th to 10th.
Jed Latshaw survived restart after restart to capture the 20-Lap Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model feature.
Latshaw started on the outside pole and beat Cameron Benyou to lead Lap 1. From there, he survived nine caution periods and was able to take the win over Shawn Miller, Chase Billet, Troy Miller, and Travis Mease.
In Limited Stock action, Adam Campbell was the third different leader and collected the win in the 15-Lap main event.
Tim Ramp led twice over the race distance, with Travis Brown also taking two turns at the point. Campbell took the lead from Brown on Lap 14 and led the final two circuits for the win.
Brown finished second, followed by Ramp, AJ Hoffner, and Matt Worley. Campbell, Brown, and Worley were heat winners for the 25-car field.
