Inside Line Promotions – FRANKLIN, Pa. (April 27, 2021) – Consistency has been the key word around Greg Wilson Racing this year.
The emphasis to step away from full-time points racing and instead select weekly events that make the most sense for the team is paying off. Wilson produced a pair of top fives and three top 10s last weekend to extend his top-10 streak to six straight races for his Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics and DNC Hydraulics backed team.
“We’re tip toeing around being really good,” he said. “We’ve been okay. We need that last little bit that makes you good enough to win.”
The weekend began on Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where Wilson qualified fifth quickest in his group, advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race and maneuvered from 12th to 10th in the A Main. It marked his third consecutive top 10 at the track.
“We ran a different motor again and that was the last of that happening because we’ve ran through them,” he said. “It showed us some stuff under the hood that we want to work on. We didn’t gain anything as far as being more competitive or less competitive, but it pointed at something that we’ve been trying to figure out. We made a couple of changes for the feature, but with it being cold out the track stayed pretty heavy so we were pretty tight all feature. We were fortunate to come out of there with a top 10.”
Wilson ventured east to invade Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pa., on Saturday for the first time since July 2015. He advanced from fifth to third place in both a heat race and the main event to record his first podium of the season in the 410ci winged sprint car division.
“We were playing the weather game a bit,” he said. “I was hoping we’d get two nights of racing in versus staying at home and getting one in. It played out well from that side of things. Mercer is a pretty flat race track and something that we need to work on with our program. I was pretty happy with how we were competitive all night against the drivers who run well there.”
Wilson also made his first trip to Tri-City Raceway Park since July 2011 on Sunday. A run from sixth to third place in a heat race gave him the fourth starting spot for the main event.
“The race track got pretty rough and they were tearing up some cars,” he said. “The first part of the race I was probably being more cautious than I should have been. I didn’t want to get torn up and not be there at the end. We got strung out equally. They had a red and I changed my line after the restart. I wouldn’t say we got better, but going above it and cutting across it was way smoother than bouncing through the holes. That’s the first big track we’ve been on with the 410. Getting everything balanced on a track with a lot of wing speed was good.”
Wilson’s fourth-place finish was his seventh top five of the season.
A trio of FloRacing All Star Circuit of Champions races highlight this weekend with races on Friday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.; on Saturday at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; and on Sunday at Tri-City Raceway Park.
