(Bill W) September 6, 2011 – Chad Humston and the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m team won for the second year in a row at the Belleville Highbanks in Belleville, Kansas on Labor Day weekend. The Giltner, Nebraska driver swept the night after winning his heat race from outside row three. Action will be closer to home this weekend at the Junction Motor Speedway on Saturday.
After a frustrating time the prior weekend at Knoxville, where the team finished second in the points race, it took a lot of effort to be ready for Belleville. “First I have to thank Rich Werner and Dan Humston for all their hard work,” says Chad. “They put in a lot of extra hours getting our motor and car ready to go this week. They had the motor in the car on Thursday.”
Everything seemed to click Sunday night for the NCRA sanctioned event. “We just had everything working well all night,” says Chad. “The car was perfect, and the motor was tuned perfect. I was just able to grab the lead about halfway through the heat, and we checked out from there. It felt really good, and it gave us confidence heading into the feature.”
The run in the heat from sixth to first was steady and smooth. “The track was a little dry down low, but there was a little bit of a line down there to run,” says Chad. “The preferred line was the top. I used the bottom for slide jobs, and then it was back up top. That’s what took me to the win.”
The heat win put Chad on the pole for the main event. The third time was the charm on the drop of the green. “We had a couple of restarts at the beginning,” he says. “A car stopped on the first try, and we had a couple tip over on the next one. The third one, we finally took off, and I think we had a great start.”
There was a lone yellow flag the rest of the way, but it didn’t affect the performance of the #1m. “There was one more caution on lap three,” says Chad. “From there, we went to the checkered flag. We came into a lot of lapped traffic. The car was so good; we were passing two at a time sometimes out there.”
The victory came at a great time for the team. “It was awesome,” says Chad. “It was a real fun night. You really have to pay attention to what you are doing. That place really tests the skill and reflexes of a driver in lapped traffic. I’m sure I made a few mistakes, but it was good enough to keep us in Victory Lane. That’s two in a row for us on Labor Day weekend at Belleville.”
The team will race with the ASCS-Midwest series at the Junction Motor Speedway near McCool Junction on Saturday night.
