Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 15, 2021) – Joey Amantea battled back with a damaged race car to qualify for the feature and move forward during Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint Car action last Saturday at Port Royal Speedway.
“With the car being in the shape it was in, just getting into the A Main was an accomplishment in itself,” he said. “My guys busted their tails and that says a lot about our drive and want to succeed. All things considering, I was pretty pleased.”
Amantea began the night by starting on the outside of the front row in a heat race. He led the first four laps and was running comfortably in second when contact with a fellow competitor resulted in a crash. With the help of multiple other teams, Amantea and his team thrashed to get the car ready for the B Main. He earned the last transfer spot for the feature by finishing where he started – sixth.
“We had a lot of help, but we worked pretty hard just to get the car together to be able to get on the track,” he said. “It wasn’t pretty by any means, but we were able to get into the last transfer spot and tag the rear for the feature.”
Amantea managed to power his bent race car forward six positions to finish 18th at the completion of the A Main. The top-20 run was his second of the season and was a result he was proud of after the work it took just to qualify.
“When you see 18th on the results page it’s not going to look like much, but we worked our tails off for that top-20 finish,” he said. “My guys just have no quit. We knew the car wasn’t going to be right and we didn’t have a ton of time to really work on it, so to come out there and pass six cars is something to be proud of.”
Next up for Amantea is a trip to Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa., to compete with the USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint Cars on Friday. He enters the weekend currently tied for sixth in the championship standings and only trails fifth by 13 markers. He’ll also make his first 600cc micro sprint start of the season on Saturday at Hamlin Speedway in Hamlin, Pa.
“We’re rolling out practically a brand new car for Bedford, so I’m looking forward to shaking it down and seeing how we stack up,” he said. “I’ve never been there before, but I’ve heard a lot about how unique of a place it is. I’m coming in with an open mind and hoping for some positive results.”
