Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (April 5, 2021) – A mechanical problem abbreviated Kaleb Johnson’s season-opening weekend at I-80 Speedway, forcing him to withdraw early from Friday night’s A Main and preventing him from competing on Saturday.
“It obviously wasn’t the way we had hoped to start the year, but it is what it is,” he said. “We discovered a bad oil leak after the heat race on Friday and we weren’t able to fix it for the feature. It didn’t hurt the motor, but it was enough to keep us from racing on Saturday.”
Johnson’s evening began well when he advanced from fourth to second place in his heat race to qualify for the Spring Meltdown feature redraw despite a car that wasn’t to his liking.
“We tried some different things with the car that didn’t work well,” he said. “I guess I did okay in the heat race, but I wasn’t really comfortable in the car. That was probably the good thing about the oil leak. It came on a night when our car wasn’t real good.”
Johnson started fifth in the night’s main event before struggling and dropping back to about 10th after a few laps.
“The oil was getting everywhere,” he said. “My shoes and the bottom of my firesuit were covered with it. When I had to start pulling tear-offs because it was getting on my visor I figured it was time to pull in.”
Next up for Johnson will be the South Dakota Sprint Car Nationals at Park Jefferson International Speedway in North Sioux City, S.D., this Friday and Saturday with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series.
“I’m looking forward to racing at Park Jefferson this weekend,” he said. “We’ll get things changed on the car and hopefully we won’t have any more issues. I’m looking forward to getting some laps and seeing how we stack up.”
