(Bill W) August 24, 2011 – After a well deserved week off, the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m team and driver Chad Humston were ready to roll last Saturday night at the Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan, Nebraska. The NCRA was in town, and $2,000 was on the line for the winner. Chad would finish a strong second. This week, the team will be back at the Knoxville Raceway after three weeks absence since the 360 Nationals.
The draw would not go well, but it proved to be a key for success. “Parker (Burch) and I went up to draw,” says Chad. “We drew a 70 out of 75. It was all right. The NCRA lines straight up by passing points to start the feature. I knew starting in the back, we had a chance to rack up some passing points.”
Starting towards the back of the heat, the Giltner, Nebraska driver made the most of his lot. “It worked out better than we planned,” says Chad. “Before the race starts, you always think about how the race is going to go for you. Everything just went the way I wanted it to. We started sixth and by turns three and four we were in the lead.”
Chad finds himself on the high line more often than not, and it paid off in the heat. “One of the cars had trouble getting off to a start and everyone got bundled up behind him,” he says. “I kind of went around everybody.”
As the team examined the racetrack, they knew it would succumb to rubber being laid. “It was slick all night long,” says Chad. “It was glazed over. You could tell it was going to take rubber. It had already taken some. There was a fine line out there already. I don’t think it took it hard until about ten or twelve laps into the race.”
Having earned the pole for the main event, Chad took off in a well-prepared car. “We had the lead early,” he says. “I had the wing all the way back at the start because it was so slick. As the track took more rubber, I kept trying to move the wing forward. The wing slider was stuck all the way back. I was out of luck there.”
The win problem tightened things up. “I got pretty tight and it was tough getting through the corners,” says Chad. “That’s when Jeremy (Campbell) passed me. They had their car hooked up in that rubber and he didn’t look like he was struggling at all.”
Chad held on for a solid second. “I felt like a champ in the car,” he says. “Everyone had the car working really well. Driving fifteen minutes from my house to the track was awesome too.”
It will be a longer journey for sure this week, as the team will spend the second to last night at the Knoxville Raceway. “We’d like to get another win there for sure,” says Chad, who won back on July 16 at Knoxville. “Our team will be giving it all we have!”
