Matt Covington and the OE&M Covington Motorsports racing team capped off an up and down weekend by bringing home the ASCS Lone Star Series Championship.
Matt and the team headed down to Cowtown Speedway on Friday night to race the last race of the 2011 ASCS Lone Star region championship. Matt would start the heat from the 4th position and struggle with a locked down race track and tight handling car. Matt would lose a couple positions and fall back to 6th, putting himself in the B-main for the evening. After getting the 4th and final transfer spot in the B-main, Matt would start the A-main from the 20th starting position. At the drop of the green Matt would start working his way through the field, breaking into the top-ten by the midway point of the race. With the laps winding down Matt would work his way into 7th and set his sights on the 6th position before having to pull to the infield with 3 laps to go due to running out of fuel. A tuff ending to a hard fought night of many ups and downs. It was an honest mistake and oversight after Matt and the crew was scrambling around and changing the set-up from the B-main to the A. The final run down would show Matt in the 15th position and scoring enough points to lock up the ASCS Lone Star championship and come away the victor.
After bringing home the Championship hardware Matt and the crew would jump in the rig and head to Lawton Speedway for some ASCS Sooner action on Saturday night. Matt currently sets 2nd in the 2011 ASCS Sooner region standings. Matt would draw the highest pill of the draw and start the heat from the last row and 8th starting position. Matt would work hard in the heat to drive from 8th to 5th and secure a front row starting position for the B-main. Matt was able to pull away and win the B-main to give himself the 15th starting position in the A. In the A-main Matt was able to work his way through the field and towards the front to crack the top 5 at the checkers and bring home a 5th place finish. To come away with a top 5 after the high pill draw and also be able to bring home the ASCS Lone Star Championship the night before, would have to be considered all in all a good and successful weekend. Another positive note was that every time the car hit the race track all weekend it was fast and had a lot of speed in it.
As the season winds down Matt and the team look to keep the momentum going and also try their hand again this weekend at I-30 Speedway. On the card for Saturday is an ASCS Sooner region special $3,000 to win, non-points race in preparation for the upcoming Short Track Nationals.
