YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Chase Gutshall made a pretty big chassis change over the Winter and couldn’t wait to kick off the Super Sportsman season at BAPS Motor Speedway.
That’s the case anytime you make a major product change. You are anxious to see how it affects your car and overall on-track performance.
So far, so good for Gutshall and his new Sledgecraft Chassis. At least it looked that way during Saturday’s 25-Lap BAPS Super Sportsman feature in which the 20-year-old driver recorded the impressive victory.
“To start off the bat and have success like we did with this new chassis, it’s pretty good going into the season as a driver and for our crew guys,” Gutshall said. “We started with this new chassis, and it likes everything we do so far.
“I’m pretty happy with it and excited. I can move to the top of the track, the bottom of the track, and run through the middle. I can put that car anywhere, and it sticks. So, we are pretty pumped for the season.”
In other action at the speedway, Shaun Miller captured the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event. Other winners were Michael Goodwin in the Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature, Kody Sites in the Street Stock division, and Roland Brown in Classic Car competition.
As for Gutshall, he had a tough march to the front in the Sportsman A-Main. He lined up ninth on the grid behind heavy hitters like Russ Mitten, Opening Day winner Frankie Herr, and track champion Kenny Edkin.
The first lap was marred by a flip in Turn 2 that involved John Edkin. He was OK. Daniel John, Timmie Barrick, and Nate Young went to the pit area for work.
Mitten grabbed the top spot from his pole starting spot and led the first three circuits. Kenny Edkin, who started eighth, charged to the front and disposed of Mitten to pace the field on Lap 4.
Edkin continued to lead Mitten on the ninth circuit. Meanwhile, Gutshall was surging forward, passing Herr and Scott Dellinger to take third. One lap later, he shot by Mitten coming out of Turn 4 to take second.
“We had that wreck right away, and I kind of got the feel for the car in Turn 1 and 2,” Gutshall said. “We had that open red, and my crew chief came down and asked if I needed anything adjusted, and did I get a feel for the car?
“I told him right then and there, ‘I think we have a good car and don’t touch it.’ When I went into Turn 1 and 2 before we had the red flag, it stuck, and the car drove off pretty good.”
Gutshall chased down Edkin over the next 10 laps and was within two car-lengths by the time Lap 17 was scored. On the next circuit, Gutshall looked to make a move for the lead through the third and fourth corner.
There was no epic battle. Edkin slowed coming out of the fourth turn and went pit side, and Gutshall took over the top spot.
“Right before he broke, I felt like I was gaining on him a good bit,” Gutshall said. “Then, he moved down to the bottom, and I was starting to reel him in even more.
“Coming out of Turn 4, that’s when he slowed down and broke. I tapped him, and once I got past him and got in clean air, the car felt really good. I was just pacing myself to not mess up, run smooth, and last to the checker.”
No problem, there. Gutshall went unchallenged the rest of the way and took the win by 1.236 seconds. Frankie Herr rebounded from a penalty for jumping a start to finish second, with Mitten claiming third.
Timmie Barrick came back from an early spin to finish eighth and earn MAC Tools Hard Charger honors. Jay Fannasy, Gutshall, and Kenny Edkin were heat winners for the 23-car field.
In the 358 Late Model main, Shaun Miller lined up third and followed Wayne Pfeil for the first 16 circuits. The tandem of Miller and Seventh-start Chase Billet blew past the leader on Lap 17.
Billet, who won the Opening Day feature, was close to Miller, but he couldn’t make a move for the win. Miller, son of defending track champion Troy Miller, took the win by 1.066 seconds at the finish.
Pfeil slipped to third ahead of Randy Stoudt and Chuck Schutz. Billet and Shaun Miller were heat winners for the 18-car field.
The Extreme Stock feature was an entertaining affair that had four different leaders over the 20-lap distance. Hunter Fulton led the first eight laps from the pole before Chase Rehbein took over for three laps.
Austin Hogue stormed from fifth to the lead on Lap 12. Goodwin, who started seventh, made his way to the front and passed Hogue on Lap 15 before leading the rest of the way.
Kody Sites passed Ryan Smith on Lap 4 to capture the Street Stock main event. Roland Brown led the last six laps of the non-stop 20-lap Classic Car feature.
