STARKS PICKS UP FIRST CAREER WIN AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (Aug. 22) – It was about a year ago when Trey Starks thought he earned a coveted spot in Victory Lane.

However, Starks was a few pounds shy on the scales and his first career sprint car victory was nullified. Although the disappointment hasn’t dissipated from that moment, it was eased last Saturday when Starks officially picked up career win No. 1 at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash.

“I took the checkered, ran one hard lap around the top and then when I came back on the frontstretch I thought of the weight issue from last time,” he said. “I kicked it out of gear and shut it off. There was a slight moment of nervousness when we went over the scales, then I made weight and let out a huge sigh of relief.”

The 15-year-old from Puyallup, Wash., started fourth in the 410 feature at the 3/10-mile dirt oval. He was in third on the first lap and up to second on lap three. A caution on the fourth lap bunched the field up and Starks took advantage on the restart.

“On the restart, Travis Jacobson went to the top and I pulled a huge slider,” he said. “Then I ran the bottom the rest of the race. That was weird. I had never run the majority of a race on the bottom there.”

While Starks said he never heard anybody or saw a car get next to him, he didn’t want to give up the bottom.

“I thought that was the fastest way around the track,” he said. “Actually, when I ran that lap around the top after the checkered flag, it was half a second faster than what I was running on the bottom.”

Starks had been clawing at his first win for awhile. Prior to Saturday, he had six top-five finishes this season, including a trio of runner-up performances. He also had finished fifth the previous two weeks at Skagit Speedway.

Also of note, crew member Dallas Melby raced one of Starks’ cars in the 360 class and recorded a top 10 on Saturday.

Starks will race on Friday and Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., with the ASCS Northwest Region.

Starks, who ranks fourth in the ASCS Northwest Region points with six races remaining, has finished second and sixth at the 3/8-mile track during ASCS competition this season.
