Covington Nets a Pair of Top-5s to Kick-off the National Tour Season at Devils Bowl

CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (March 24th, 2021) Matt Covington got off to a solid start for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last weekend during the 48th Annual Spring Nationals season opener.

Aboard the Triple X/ Shark Racing Engines mount, Covington earned a pair of top-5s for the weekend’s double header at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, placing 5th Friday and 4th on Saturday.

“This was a good start to the season for us,” Covington said. “In the past, we haven’t always been consistent. We’re either up front or way in the back with a DNF or provisional. So, coming out with back-to-back top 5’s after struggling a bit with setups is great. Hopefully we can keep that up.”

Covington advanced from 7th to 4th place in his heat race on Friday. A 2nd place finish in the qualifier locked him into the 13th starting spot for the A Main.
“We struggled at first with the car during the heats and qualifiers,” he said. “But we finally just set the notebook aside and tried some new things for the feature. Luckily, it paid off by giving us a car that was able to drive up to 5th.”

Saturday night, after getting the car lined out, gave Covington a better start. He claimed the heat race win and gained passing points in the qualifier by advancing from 6th to 3rd. The total finishing points set him up with the outside pole position for the A-Feature.

The feature saw Covington slip a few spots early before settling in 4th around the hub. He battled to keep that position for the remainder of the race. Ultimately, his competitors were unable to take it from him, earning him 4th place as the checkers waved.

“Saturday night’s feature track condition was the opposite of Friday,” Matt commented. “I made some adjustments to the car that were really helpful off the corner but made the car not as good in the center, which killed my corner speed. We needed that to stay out front and contend for the win. But I can’t complain about two top-5’s and learning some new setup techniques. That’s a successful weekend in my book. I got to thank Matt Howard on his hard work all weekend. He’s doing a good job filling in for Mike who’s been out for a while due to health issues. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Covington has an ASCS National Tour tripleheader on schedule this weekend. Thursday at Superbowl Speedway in Greenville, Texas, and Friday along with Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.
