Inside Line Promotions – MT POCONO, Pa. (March 22, 2021) – Joey Amantea is prepared to start his rookie season behind the wheel of a 360ci sprint car this Saturday with the United Racing Club at Bridgeport Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J.
While Amantea made a handful of sprint car starts last season, this will be his first season where his main focus will be the 360 division. He has approximately 60 races planned between both winged and non-wing 360 sprint car competition in 2021.
“We got a taste last season of what it’s like to run a 360 sprint car and my dad and I really just buckled down and decided this is the route we want to take for my career,” he said. “We worked really hard this offseason to make sure we were doing everything right and just trying to build a solid operation from the top to the bottom. I’m really excited to get this season going at Bridgeport and see if that work pays off.”
To get ready for the first race of the season Amantea took part in a test-and-tune session a week ago. Although mechanical problems cut his night short of what they had planned, Amantea did manage to make multiple runs and he feels comfortable heading into his season debut.
“We made a couple of runs on the track and we got better each time out,” he said. “We suffered a mechanical issue that ended our night, but I can say with all honesty that just in that little bit of practice I learned so much about these cars and our team. I think we’ll be good right off the bat and I have high expectations.”
Amantea set goals to win the Rookie of the Year Award in both the URC series and the Rapid Tire East Coast Wingless 360 series. He also believes that a win in each division is not out of the question. With that said, Amantea knows his biggest obstacle in achieving those goals will be his team gelling early and finding success at new tracks he’s yet to visit.
“We hired a crew chief in the offseason and he has seen a lot of these tracks, but really he’s only ever done it on the winged side of things,” he said. “When it comes to my dad and I, we kind of have focused on wingless the past few years a lot more so it’s going to be an interesting dynamic of us all coming together and learning. I know we have equipment capable of running up front and ultimately I put the responsibility on me to catch up quick, keep learning and relay that info so we can put ourselves in a position to maximize our potential.”
While the focus has been on the 360 sprint car, Amantea still has quite a few micro sprint races on his schedule for 2021. Depending on weather and scheduling conflicts, he could potentially make 40-to-50 starts in the division to bring his season total to close to 100 races.
“I was looking over our schedule and if all goes as planned we’re going to be extremely busy this season,” he said. “I love to race and the only way to perfect your craft and get better is to get laps. Some people might think we’re biting off a bit too much this year, but I’m excited for the challenge and when it comes to the micro sprint, we’re coming to win and win a lot.”
