CG Motorsports-GLENPOOL, Ok. (March 11th, 2021) Matt Covington came home with a runner-up and 6th place effort this past weekend with the USCS series at Chatham Speedway, kicking off the 2021 season.

Saturday night, Covington finished 2nd in the heat from the 6th starting position, then drew the outside pole for the feature. With the drop of the green, Matt fell in close behind Mark Smith for the first couple of laps before Smith started stretching his lead. Once the pair hit lap traffic, Matt was able to reel him back in. However, the timing of the cautions denied any passing opportunities and in clean air, Smith had the advantage. Matt had to settle for 2nd when the checkers flew.

“We were good on Saturday for the first night out of the box, we just didn’t quite have the speed we needed in clean air,” stated Matt.

Friday’s rainout pushed the second scheduled event to Sunday afternoon, giving Covington and crew a second chance at Chatham Speedway.

The afternoon began with a 3rd place heat race effort, earning Matt the 7th starting position in the feature. With the A-main underway, the 95 worked the race surface to gain positions before the track took rubber. He was only able to gain one spot before the rubber arrived, holding him in the 6th position until the end.

“We were just a little too free before the rubber set in during the feature Sunday,” commented Covington. “I thought the rubber would come in earlier in the race. Our setup was too conservative, hurting us before the track finally took rubber. But I’m still happy with our performance and the speed we showed for our first weekend of the year.”

This weekend Matt Covington will travel to a new track with the USCS Tour to take on North Alabama Speedway.
