Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Feb. 25, 2021) – Dominic Scelzi rallied for a top-five finish last Saturday during his first start in his home state this season.
Scelzi was efficient throughout the night at Keller Auto Speedway, where he qualified fourth quickest in his group. He gained a position in a heat race to place second, which was only one spot shy of making the dash.
“We were trying to get a little aggressive in qualifying and it didn’t work,” he said. “That slowed us down a bit from where we hot lapped. We went back to what we normally do and were really good in the heat race.”
Scelzi started the main event on the outside of the fifth row, but lost a few positions early to avoid a crash.
“Someone nearly spun out and everyone checked up going into the first corner,” he said. “I had to move way out of the way and fell to around 14th. My car was really, really good. A lot of the guys at the beginning of the race were running around the bottom. I just sailed it around the top. I got back to 10th in six or seven laps.”
As the race moved along so did Scelzi’s confidence as his sprint car improved lap by lap. He cracked the top five late in the race and made a last-lap move to secure a fourth-place showing.
“I ran the bottom a little in turns one and two and slid through the middle in turns three and four a bit, but for the most part I was running the top,” he said. “Toward the end, once I got into seventh or so, I was sliding guys. I felt like I had a car just as good as second or third.”
Scelzi will take this weekend off before heading to Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif., on March 5-6 for a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader.
