Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (Dec. 3, 2020) – Garet Williamson wanted to make amends for a frustrating early-season visit to Arizona.
The Bryant Paver Motorsports team certainly did that last weekend as Williamson posted a pair of top 10s while racing in a stacked field of 50-plus drivers at the ASCS Southwest Region’s Copper Classic hosted by Arizona Speedway. He placed seventh during the opening night on Friday before capping the season with a fifth-place outing on Saturday.
“It was a super-good run as a team,” he said. “We started the year out in Arizona and I didn’t make a show. To come from that at the beginning of the year to running top 10 two nights in a row and getting a top five, it’s pretty awesome.”
The car was on point from the time it rolled off the trailer and the Missouri driver knew what to do with it during heat-race action, which set him up for solid qualifier runs during each program in the two-day event.
During Night 1 action, Williamson finished third in his heat race and drove from seventh to fourth in his qualifier. In the main event, he battled more experienced drivers before placing seventh.
That momentum carried over to Saturday’s finale. Williamson finished fourth in his heat race after starting ninth and moved up to second in the qualifier after lining up fourth. He duked it out for a top five throughout the feature before ending fifth.
“Tracks like that, we’ve gotten around really good all year,” Williamson said. “It’s up on the fence and fast, and we’ve been super good at places like that. The car works really well at places like that, and as a team, everything went right.
“It was also a confidence thing. We had some confidence after last week at Antioch and Merced. There wasn’t anything else going on, so everyone else was there. Everyone was watching and you want to do well on a big stage.”
Every team aims to finish the year on a high note. It builds anticipation and confidence heading into what has become a short offseason. Williamson is no different. The top-five performance added to his excitement to get back to Missouri, build cars and improve heading into his sophomore season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“Ending the year well is important,” he said. “You want to go into the offseason on a good note, and I think that helps out a lot.
“Hopefully, I can get something for the Chili Bowl and we are working on that. We are going to get a schedule together, build some cars, go over everything, and hopefully we will be better next year.”
