Inside Line Promotions – MARION, Ark. (Nov. 17, 2020) – Marshall Skinner is pleased with his 2020 racing season despite it being shortened due to the pandemic and being without his primary racing engine for most of the year.
“It was okay, considering it was short due to a late start because of the virus,” he said in reference to his 30th season of sprint car competition. “Then I hurt my motor the second night out and had to borrow motors for several months after that since it took so long to get parts due to the virus. I’m grateful for those who helped me while I was waiting for parts for my motor so that I could still have some fun.
“I started racing when I was 16-years-old. I still enjoy it. I’m thankful to have won a lot of races and championships and now I primarily do it for fun. I’ve cut back on my own racing a bit the last couple of years since my boys are racing go-karts now. I really enjoy that and I’m looking forward to the day when hopefully I can race with them in sprint cars.”
Skinner’s relatively brief season of about 20 races was highlighted by a strong showing at his biggest race of the year – the COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., last month.
“I was pretty happy with my run at the Short Track Nationals,” he said. “I was able to win my heat races and qualify for the A Main both nights while racing against about 80 other drivers. The only bad thing was I got taken out at the start of the feature on Friday, but we worked hard to rebuild the car and it was just as fast the following night.”
Skinner capped his racing season at Riverside International Speedway’s season-ending doubleheader on Nov. 6-7. He rallied from a crash in his opening night heat race for a pair of top-10 A Main finishes during the Flip Flop 50.
“We didn’t get off to a very good start on Friday,” he said. “We were three-wide going into the first turn of the heat race when the car on the outside of me came down and we made contact, sending me backwards up the track when another car took out the front end of my car. We made repairs but had to start last (12th) in our B Main the following night since I didn’t have any points due to not finishing my heat race.
“I was pretty determined in the B Main and I was able to go from 12th to second in 12 laps to get a transfer to the A Main. Then I finished 10th in the A Main after starting 18th. I started fifth in the second A Main, but I messed around and got the car too tight and that’s where I finished.”
