Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 21, 2020) – Garet Williamson wanted to end his first season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour on a positive note.

That’s all any rookie can hope for while racing with a national series, especially after posting pretty good numbers over what has been a difficult season.

Although last weekend wasn’t quite what Williamson was looking for, the Bryant Paver Motorsports driver did polish off his first ASCS season by making both features at the tricky Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Williamson finished 16th and 19th, respectively, in feature competition during the 47th annual Winter Nationals.

“Obviously, we wanted better results, but for the first time at Devil’s Bowl, I’ll take it,” he said. “The track is super difficult. I talked to a couple of drivers during the weekend and they said it’s a place you need to get a lot of laps at. It has a hill on both ends of the track that makes it super tricky and takes some getting used to.

“I will take that into next year when I go there. You can’t get down on yourself when you don’t feel right and you just need to make more laps and to get comfortable there.”

Getting more experience was the focus for Williamson throughout the weekend. He made it through his heat race Friday night by advancing from sixth to fourth, but was forced to run the B Main to transfer to the main event Saturday.

Only a handful of drivers could make moves and pass cars in both feature events. It was even more difficult in the back of the field and Williamson made the most of another experience-gaining weekend with the series.

It was a pretty good season for Williamson, who finished with three top 10s in 13 Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour feature starts. He placed ninth in the final point standings.

“I think it was a pretty good year for us,” the 20-year-old said. “If you take out the first part of our year in Arizona and California, I think we are almost in the top five. I also think if we go out there with our crew chief, Chad (Cypert), I think we definitely had a top-five car in points.

“I will take it. We had some good runs and for our first year we learned a ton. Going into next year all the tracks won’t be first-time tracks. It will be good to go places a second time and I think that will help a lot.”

Williamson’s 2020 campaign isn’t over. He is going back to California for season-ending events at Stockton Dirt Track, Keller Auto Speedway and Merced Speedway before racing in Arizona Thanksgiving weekend.

“I had a lot of fun at the beginning of the year, but we got our heads kicked in a little bit,” he said. “I didn’t have Chad and I didn’t have everything I do now. I think we will be better our second go-around.

“Those guys are super good out there. It’s always cowboy up and you’ve got to be on the wheel. I think it makes you a better driver so I’m pumped up. I think a lot of those tracks fit my driving style where you’ve got to be on the wheel.”

The next race is Nov. 7 at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the 37th annual Tribute to Gary Patterson.
