CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (Sept 16th, 2020) Matt Covington came home with an 5th place finish, earning the Hard Charger award this past Saturday night, aboard his Triple X/Shark Racing Engines mount with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at I-80 Speedway for the Midwest Brawl.
Matt started off the night with a 2nd place finish in the heat, followed by a 4th place in the qualifier. These combined efforts gave him the 14th starting position in the A-feature.
From the drop of the green, Covington worked his A-Rock Materials/Loose Change machine to the front, breaking into the top-10 after a handful of laps. With a fast race car and railing the high side, Covington was able to charge forward, closing in on the Top-5. With a side by side photo finish for 4th, Covington settled for 5th at the checkers, earning the Hard Charger award for gaining 9 positions during the feature.
“Saturday night was a good run for us and solid top-5,” stated Covington. “It was good to be able to move forward in the feature and get the hard charger. But I would have liked to have that speed in the heat and qualifier. Starting that far back in the feature, we decided to gamble with some drastic changes to the car and it paid off. I feel we had a chance at the podium if we had a better starting spot or more laps. Mike has been working hard and we are ready to go to Lucas Oil this weekend, which has been one of my better tracks if we can get a little luck to go with it.”
Up next for Matt and the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented is the 10th annual General Tire Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
