Shane Golobic Storms to Civil War Win in Petaluma

PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night during the 10th round of the 2011 California Civil War Series, Freemont, CA driver, Shane Golobic, used a lap 28 pass to get around race leader, Steven Tiner, to pick up his first series win of 2011.

The race got off to a slow start as a series of cautions slowed Tiner’s pace as he grabbed the early lead from his pole starting position. In fact the first eight laps featured three caution flags never allowing the race to get into a strong flow.

Following a lap 11 caution, which eventually turned into an open red, Tiner and fellow front row starter, Herman Klein, began exchanging the lead for several laps bringing the crowd to their feet as each attempted to tip-toe around the gnarly rut that was built exiting the fourth turn.

As the two traded slide jobs, Shane Golobic and Stephen Allard continued to gain on the duo as they anticipated any mistake.

While Tiner finally grabbed the point and began to pull away from the field, Klein fell victim to lap traffic, as lap twenty contact brought is Dale Wondergem owned machine to a stop with damage, ending his night, and changing the complexion of the race.

The restart with 10-laps remaining saw Tiner lead over Golobic, Allard, Trent Canales, and a charging Kyle Hirst who started in the 15th position.

With Tiner quickly hitting the loud pedal to pull to the advantage, Golobic was hot on his trail and kept Tiner’s STR #94 in his sights as he began working the top side of the speedway, gaining ground on the leader.

On the 28th circuit, Golobic was able to pull alongside Tiner as the duo entered the third turn, and the youngster was able to grab the lead as they exited turn four.

Golobic was flawless over the next two laps as he was able to hold off Tiner and pick up his first Civil War win of 2011, after running second at the same venue during the last Civil War Race. Tiner held on to second, Trent Canales was able to get around Allard with five to go as , Allard biked in three and four, to pick up the his best finish of the Civl War season, third, Hirst grabbed fourth, and Allard hung on to fifth.

Alissa Geving won the B-feature and heat race wins went to Jeff Parady, Herman Klein, Steven Tiner, and Kyle Hirst.

ON TAP: The Civil War Series will take a week off before returning to action on August 6, 2011 at the scenic Calistoga Speedway in historic Calistoga, CA for the annual Calistoga Cup.
