Inside Line Promotions – JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 3, 2020) – Trey Burke is starting to get the hang of this road racing thing.
It hasn’t come easy. He’s had to adjust to drafting, making passes, car angle and more to succeed against some pretty stiff competition. The learning curve had been steep, but Burke is succeeding. The 15-year-old Texas driver added to his list of accomplishments in the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series last weekend at the Autobahn Country Club, earning a win and a runner-up result.
“With these cars you’ve got to get it at the right pitch and angle with the throttle and not so much with your hands like I’m used to on dirt,” Burke said. “I can’t always use the throttle to get me out of situations like I can on dirt.
“Last week was really good and I think I’m getting there. I’m figuring out the process and the whole drafting and passing concept as well.
“I was in no way a road course racer before this year, not even close. From the boot cut suit – the suit styles are different – and no one knew what an arm restraint was, it was like, ‘Wow, I am out of my element.’ It’s really cool and I think I’m getting there.”
That showed in the opener at the Illinois course on Saturday. Burke set quick time in qualifying and led throughout the 30-minute event to take the win, which was his second career.
In the second race, which was held on Sunday, Burke qualified fourth quickest and polished off another impressive second-place finish. He was running third in the final 30-minute race on Sunday, but another driver made contact with his car and dropped him to 13th.
“It was difficult because we didn’t have the best car the week before in New Orleans so we were fighting that,” Burke said. “To come back and have three races like that, it was really good.”
Burke gained confidence, which is going to be beneficial moving forward. There are two stops and six races remaining on the schedule, and the points battle is close.
Heading into the Sept. 24-26 three-race event at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla., Burke is tied for fifth in the standings – 52 points out of first. One week later, he ventures to Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla., for the finale with more precious points on the line.
“It will be close,” he said. “There are six races left and it will come down to the last race. I feel confident. We get to drop three races, so I feel at this point it’s still anybody’s game.”
