Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (Aug. 25, 2020) – Joey Amantea continued his growth as a sprint car driver when he picked up an 11th-place finish behind the wheel of a 360ci sprint car last Saturday at Port Royal Speedway during the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint Cars event.
Amantea also continued a successful season in the wingless micro sprint car ranks as he recorded a ninth-place finish Friday night at Spirit Auto Center Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J., to give him 29 top-10 outings on the season.
“I really like doing the wingless 360 stuff and I feel like it really suits my driving style,” he said. “I would have liked to have finished inside the top 10, but ultimately this was a big week for me in terms of my future in racing and my growth.”
Amantea began the weekend on Friday at Spirit Auto Center Speedway by finishing sixth in a heat race. He then placed second in a B Main to secure the 24th starting spot in the A Main. Amantea followed that up by advancing 15 positions in the feature to garner a ninth-place result.
“We tried something new with the setup and it worked really well in practice, but we were way off come the heat race,” he said. “We changed things up a bit and found something that really worked. It’s unfortunate that we kind of had to throw a race away to find something out, but it’ll help us long term.”
Amantea then headed to Port Royal Speedway on Saturday to compete for the first time with the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint Cars. He advanced three positions in a heat race to finish fourth and secure the 10th starting position in the feature.
Slick track conditions made it tough to pass in the A Main, but Amantea persevered to advance as high as seventh before slipping to 11th at the completion of the 25-lap event.
“It was pretty cool out there as there were a couple times when I was splitting cars and going three-wide in the turns trying to make up ground,” he said. “Just to be out there racing on a track like Port Royal is a special feeling and I can’t wait to do more wingless 360 racing.”
Next up for Amantea will be a three-race weekend featuring two nights of winged 360 sprint car competition and one night of wingless micro sprint action. He’ll be behind the wheel of the Burke Family No. 54 on Friday at Penn-Can Speedway in Susquehanna, Pa., with the Patriot Sprint Tour and Saturday at BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, Pa., with the Capital Renegade URC 360 Sprints Cars for the 358/360 Challenge. On Sunday Amantea will return to Spirit Auto Center Speedway in his family owned micro sprint.
