The hot streak of top 5 finishes for Scotty Thiel and the #64 STM Sprint car came to a close this past weekend after two nights of bad luck struck the team.
Friday night at the Manitowoc County Speedway, Thiel started 8th in the heat race event. With the track being very tacky and greasy, passing was difficult. A crash early on in the heat allowed Scotty to move into the 6th position and thats where he would finsih. That finsih would allow Thiel to start in the 14th spot for the nights 30 lap A-main event. At the drop of the green flag, Scotty began to charge forward and was in the 6th position in 6 laps. As Thiel was about to make a slide job for the 5th position, the car pushed up and Scotty bumped tires and caused the other car to get sideways and causing a caution. Thiel went to the work area and the team found that the right rear shock bolt had broken and it was a struggle to get the old bolt out and a new on in. The time for the work area had ran out and the Thiel was not able to return to the racing action.
Saturday night at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds and the Plymouth Dirt Track, Thiel started 4th in the heat race event. At the drop of the green flag, he jumped into the 3rd spot and it was a tight battle for the top 3. Coming to the checkerd flag, Thiel just inched into 2nd and secured a 5th place starting position for the night's extended features and a 30 lap A-Main event. At the green, Thiel worked both top and bottom side of the track to see where his car was best and ended up jumping up to the top side and made a few passes. Scotty ran 3rd for the first half of the race and on a restart around the half way point, he jumped into the 2nd position and charged down the leader. Then, coming into turns 1 and 2, Thiel noticed the car drop to the right side and he quickly pulled off the race groove and a caution came out. He went to the work area and the crew discovered that the stop with holds the right front of the car up had fell off and the torsion bar and fell out as well. The were able to get Scotty back out but the car was not the same. With only a few laps to go, Thiel managed to take home a 17th place finish.
Overall, it was not a good weekend for Scotty Thiel and the #64 STM Sprint Car team. It was unfortunate, especially after the top 5 hot streak they have been having. The team will push this past weekend off and focus on the upcoming weekend were racing will take place Friday at the Manitowoc County Speedwy and Saturday the team will be making the 7 hour haul back up to North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minnesota for the 19th Annual Kouba Memorial.
