Inside Line Promotions – KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Aug. 18, 2020) – Joey Amantea scored five more top 10s in five micro sprint starts last week, giving him 14 top 10s in his last 15 races in the sport.
“It was a pretty good week overall and we had speed every night,” he said. “Of course, we’re looking for a win every night, but ultimately we’ve had a really good year and we just continue to be consistent every time out.”
Amantea kicked off the busy week at Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa., last Wednesday during the Wingless 600 Sprint Car Fair Nationals. He advanced one position in a heat race to finish third. Amantea then started on the inside of the third row for the feature and after getting caught up in multiple accidents, he fell as far as 16th at the midway point before rebounding to finish 10th.
“I think I got caught up in every wreck we could find and the car was just way too tight,” he said. “It was one of those races where I was just happy to end up 10th.”
On Friday night he headed to Spirit Auto Center Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J. Amantea finished third in a heat race after starting seventh. He earned the third starting spot for the feature and led a handful of laps early before falling back to third at the checkered flag.
“We were actually really good and I took the lead for a few laps before hitting the slick and almost losing it,” he said. “We fell back to fifth and I was able to come back to finish third and on the podium.”
Saturday night brought a dose of double duty as Amantea competed in both winged and wingless micro sprint competition at Greenwood Valley Action Tracks in Orangeville, Pa. Beginning the night with the wing on, Amantea finished fourth in a heat race and earned the 11th starting spot in the feature. Amantea, who was suffering from a bent steering arm, muscled his way forward five positions to finish sixth in the feature.
In the wingless micro sprint, he advanced forward one position in a heat race to finish second. Amantea then moved forward two positions to finish fourth in the A Main.
“For not running the winged car for two months and being a little rusty there, I was pretty happy with our results,” he said. “The wingless car we were a little off, but ultimately it was two pretty good finishes for us against some really good competition.”
Amantea headed back to Action Track USA on Sunday. He won his heat from the pole position before he finished the feature eighth for his 28th top-10 finish of the year.
“We had a pretty good car, but track position killed us and we just really couldn’t go anywhere,” he said. “It was a nice way to end the week with another top 10 and we continue to rack up solid finishes.”
Next up for Amantea will be a return to Spirit Auto Speedway on Friday and Sunday for two nights of wingless micro sprint competition. Additionally, he will head to Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., for his second visit of the year behind the wheel of a 360 sprint car. This time it will be wingless as he joins the USAC East Coast Wingless 360 Sprint Car Series.
“I can’t wait to go wingless in the 360 sprint car and I absolutely love racing at Port Royal,” he said. “I have already been to Port Royal so it’ll be nice to gauge where I’m at a second time around and I’m hopeful for maybe a top-15 finish.”
